I'm wondering if this is normal, or something I should be concerned about.

Ds is 18 months, and we know he had a milk and a peanut allergy. I've seen both those reactions. Hives all over his face (NOT starting at his mouth) very itchy, and uncomfortable. So we are dairy and peanut free.

However, he does occasionally get a red rash around his mouth and chin while eating (food he's eaten lots of times before). Soemtimes it's just red, sometimes it will look like a hive (small insect bite like) here and there. We clean him up, and after 30 minutes it will be totally gone and you can't even tell his skin was irritated. He is never bothered by it. Of course, we are, after the terror of the other two allergic reactions. Sometimes it's obviously a contact issue - fruit juice or something, but other times it's not at all obvious, or unexplainable - it's a meal he's eaten plenty of times with no reaction.

Does anyone experience this or have any insight into what is happening?

Thanks!

Ds2 got this for while, but then it cleared up. I was told by several doctors, including a pediatric dermatologist that it was 'atopic dermatitis', or in other words eczema. If you have a history of eczema, allergies or asthma, this could be it.

Ds' rash cleared up when he was admitted to hospital with rsv. I couldn't tell you what specifically cleared it, though.

The dermatologist, however, recommended 'Prevex 200 barier cream' for any future occurences.

Yes my daughter had it too especially when she ate ranch dressing ...come to find out she has a sensitivity to MSG which is in a lot of foods and yes Salad dressing...

We just switched to more whole foods and less processed, boxed foods...it can be listed as just a natural flavor too so make sure to watch which foods give her the rash..

ds gets this too with dairy - but only where the dairy comes in contact with his skin. it doesn't seem to bother him and as a pp said it goes away about 30 min after we wipe it off. Interesting about the eczema - ds has eczema, although it's not related to the dairy.

Both my sons had the same thing. They have outgrown it now.
With both of them it was tomatoes and udon noodles if we ate out.
I don't know about the tomatoes but I think it was the msg in the restaurant noodle soup.

This is so interesting. The same thing just happened to my DS, almost 18 months. I couldn't figure out if it was the ranch dressing on his salad or the tomato sauce on his meatballs both of which he had eaten the day before with no reaction. Now looking at the responses I guess it could have been either one but I am leaning toward the ranch dressing. He does have a peanut and tree nut allergy so I gave him a dose of Benadryl when I saw it.
