My DH and I were considering a trip to the Dominican Republic for us and our 20 month old (vaxed til 5 months, then stopped. Never will again.) I know little about the country; it's just a good discount trip to a resort on the beach. My mother freaked when I told her though. Said since DS is "behind" on his vaxes, that it's totally not safe to bring him there.

Opinions, knowledge? Thanks!

There is some sort of magical total immunity that occurs when a baby is not "behind" on his vaxes?

You just research what is going on, sickness wise, in the Dominican Republic and then you decide whether it is safe or not, for the whole family.

Well, that's why I asked. Thought someone in the know might have some info. *shrugs* Not a big deal. Sure, I can do research on my own. But it always amazes me when folks get condescending comments here simply for asking a question. If you don't have the info or feel the person should go do research outside of a board (which does exist for info, btw!), then don't answer.

Not trying to be bitchy. Just noticing that such comments are rampant here. It discourages me from asking for info.

i dont think she meant it condescendingly...she was sort of saying what your mother said was total bs, meaning even if your baby was totallly vaxed, he still wouldnt be totally immune. its frustrating that a lot of people dont realize this, like your mother...
and i was going to suggest researching the country too....not being condesceing at all...thats the best answer i could give you , good luck!

Go to www.who.int/en and that should tell you, country by country, what to expect. Remember, most vaccine reccommendations are just that, not requirements.

Sorry. No, I wasn't trying to be condescending. I thought what your mom said was sort of silly and was trying to respond to that. But obviously, it fell flat! Forgive me, please.

No prob. I guess I should have clarified too. I wasn't considering the no-vax status as much as what the D.R. was like. As in: "No, I wouldn't go there right now, because there's such and such sickness that babies should avoid." Or "Yes, I'd go, because such and such illness isn't a big deal even if they get it." Ya know?

Anyway, I'm looking at that link from Apple right now.

And yes, I think my mom's comment was silly.
