Oh, THIS sounds like fun when traveling alone with two children. Tell me, does the TSA have a right to my personal psychological experiences? Maybe we could link this to a confessional of some kind, have mandatory therapists standing by, that sort of thing.

"All you know is there's an emotion being concealed. You have to find out why the emotion is occurring," says Paul Ekman, a San Francisco psychologist who pioneered work on facial expressions and is informally advising the TSA. "You can find out very quickly."
Quickly? Some people have been in therapy for years trying to figure out their emotions. I doubt a TSA agent will get to the root of your concealed emotion in 15 minutes.

Maybe they can sell their trade secrets for determining hidden emotions to the Psychiatric community for big bucks, and use it to prop up the airline industry that is going to bottom out when plane tickets become so expensive and the check in process so onerous that nobody flies anymore.

Anyway, I don't think they mean truely hidden emotions, like "I secretly hate my mother for giving my dog to the SPCA when I was six." They mean more like, "I'm nervous because I've got a dime bag sewn in a false bottom in my pocket." Much more superficial, concious emotions

Oh great, I am going to be dogpiled by a bunch of security guys when what I am really worrying about is...

What if I actually did leave the oven on? I hadn't used the oven in the past 48 hours and I was quite certain it was off...but suppose it *might* have actually been on all that time?? Oh no! There is the tiniest fraction of a chance that my oven is on!!!!

Why do you want me to go to the small room?? I need to call my ILs!!My oven could, perhaps, *possibly* be on!!!

Ack! People are jumping at me while speaking in walkie talkies!! Walkie Talkies are quite worrifying!!

This is just like Twelve Monkeys!!!

*runs away screaming*

Is found several days later sobbing quietly in a padded cell about how the bomb in her bag is actually smells quite lovely it only has the tiniest amount of glitter...how could glitter hurt anyone..

I would be one of those people. I suffer panic attacks in high-pressure social situations where I am expected to behave in a certain manner. Airports, huge malls, large stores, they all present diffculties for me. This is one of the main reasons why I never fly and have never flown. I not willing to give my personal freedom and dignity to remain "safe".

Slightly OT, but I've never heard someone describe this so vividly. I have that same experience, frequently, but it doesn't rise to the level of actual panic attacks. More like anxiety attacks. Happens at Target, especially if the kids are acting up, and anywhere that feels unduly crowded. Hmmm. Thanks for sharing this.

For the record, I wasn't trying to make fun of any but me.

I do have an anxiety disorder that is made worse by being in large crowds.

Edited because I have started rambeling and felt the need to cut myself off.

My thoughts exactly...uuggghh--who watches my kids while I do this? Does my stress about that factor in?

We've gone too far. We might as well be tracked--our every move--with surgically implanted chips and GPS.

What a crock.

Well, I guess my husband will never make it home to Germany. Being raised in East Germany he has an anxiety problem with people in uniform stemming from his experiences.

I wonder if anti-anxiety drugs, relaxers will skew the results of such machines?

They might but the excessive vomiting I would be doing might make them curious and check my shoes. Relaxors make me lay on the floor, delighted, but definate lack of mobility is involved.

I don't do well with meds.
