Just curious, have any doulas here attended a home birth? I know your main goal is to help mamas no matter where they birth, but did you tend to be more comfortable at the home birth compared to the hospital?

I prefer homebirths, as do most doulas I know!

I prefer homebirths because everything is much more laid back. There aren't any rules to follow and mom can do exactly what her body is telling her to do.

Homebirths are like going on vacation! I could say that I'd most like to attend homebirths only...except that that would really kind of go against what I am called to do as a doula, which is educate and support women where ever they need the education and support. Someday, when I'm a midwife, I'll be happy to "stay at home" with the women who choose that, until then, I'll be happy for the occaisional "vacation" from the hospital grind!

It's so nice to be able to pee (at a homebirth) and know I"m not going to come back to a mother getting stuck with narcotics or having her water broken because it's "routine!"

I would still be attending births if they were all homebirths. I attended 2 homebirths. At the first I felt utterly useless. It was awesome that mom didn't need me. Between her husband and midwife they really had things covered, she did great. My second, it was a friend's birth, and I was there as a friend more than anything, with another friend/doula. That one, I felt more useful b/c she didn't call the midwife til labor was progressing really well (mw made it by 20 minutes to catch). Homebirths rock.

Yeah, I'd prefer homebirths.

Hospital births can be very draining. Especially here! I take a deep breath when I walk into a hospital because I know that even with the most assertive client who wants a med-free birth, it's a fight for her to get what she wants.

I am for sure more comfortable at a homebirth. Things are so much more laid back and you don't worry about unnecessary things happening and the moms are generally very well informed and educated in their choices!

Homebirths, sure. But it makes me see why us doulas are SOOOOO important, so helpful, when hospitals tend to be tense--intense, and so very much not like home. After a hospital birth I feel like, "wow-I really know I made such a big difference." At home/birth center the midwives (and assistants) keep the love high and tense vibes low.

Home births for all the right reasons, and like everyone else the hospital can be so stressful, there are times when i question whether I'm a doula or defense attorney! And some times leave feeling defeated, when an over tired OB decides CS is the best route for something silly like slow progression and scares the wits out of parents to be, (oops sorry rehashing recent experience, still chafed) HOME BIRTH ALL THE WAY ALL DAY!!!!

I adore homebirths, but sadly, I don't get the chance to attend many since most of my clients head for the hospital.

i tend to be more comfortable with natural birth, no matter where it takes place. a completely natural, unmedicated, unrestricted hospital birth is very satisfying to me! i worked as a nurse for 10 years, though, so perhaps that adds to my comfort level in the hospital setting. i do love hb's, too! there's a different vibe but i wouldn't say i prefer one over the other....as long as it's natural. (i'm still working on my role in induced/medicated hospital births because i don't feel as needed. i don't feel judgemental - just a little out of sorts).

At a homebirth I feel like I can get myself in touch with the mother more, and go to that primal, instinctive place with her... but at the hospital I am usually needed more as an advocate than a support person. I also prefer homebirths, even the long marathon ones, but it is so important for hospital~birthing~mamas who want a natural birth to have an advocate there for them!!
