Blech! I just have to vent. I was flipping around on TV tonight and caught some of the show Dr. 90210. Well, this non-Jewish couple was on there having basically the equvialent of a bris at their home for the purpose of circumcising their baby boy. The mother said, "We are having our son circumcised because we think it's more hygenic. We aren't Jewish, but we decided to have a mohel come to our home to perform the procedure. We wanted family and friends to come to share in the celebration of the birth of our son."

Then during the "party" she was holding her baby and saying, "I'm sorry." Well, if she was so sorry, why is she doing it in the first place? Not that she really even looked sorry anyway. She was smiling at every opportunity. She even talked about how losing a part of your body was a big deal! Well duh.
The dad kept saying how nervous he was, but also acting very nonchalant about it.

Then they showed basically the whole circumcision, well, except for pretty much bluring out the whole area. I felt sick to my stomach. They even faded out with the sound of the baby screaming.

The whole time I just got this sense that the mother just wanted some reason to have a special ceremony for her baby and this was a good (in her mind) way to do it.

I just don't get it.

Are you talking about that Dr. Rey guy's wife? This wasn't her. It was a woman named Linda Li or something and Bill don't-know-his-last-name was her husband. I have only watched the show maybe 2-3 times, but tonight didn't really seem to include Dr. Rey or anyone else I had seen before. In the circ story there wasn't any doctor in the picture. Maybe there was more to come that I missed, but I didn't want to watch it anymore.

But, I agree that the woman you mentioned is horrible. I saw enough of her in 10 minutes to figure that out. Yuck.
Okay, I just looked at the episode guide and the mother is Dr. Li, one of the docs on the show I guess. There were four stories going on in this episode and it was called, Minor Alterations, Major Changes. Gee, I wonder which one they consider circ to be...

that show made me bawl my eyes out...I wish I hadn't watched it

and the shot of the baby they cut to right after the circ was from before the circ, I'm almost sure, cause he had the blanket all around his head and was just peaceful as can be...when they showed her holding him and you couldn't see his face, the blanket wasn't up like that

too bad the dad didn't have the cajones to stand up for himself and his son

blech is right
oh, and one of the other stories was about this guy who had a "buried penis" and the doctor who corrected it for him said it was almost certainly cause by a circumcision where they took too much skin!!!
I had heard about this show on here earlier and I caught the re-run last night. It was truly a horrific thing for them to make a party out of a circ the way they did, but it wasn't real surprising they had it done. You could tell what a fake, superficial person Dr. Li is.....and her husband was too much of a wimp to stand up to her. Of course the mohel lied and said something about how he won't hardly feel it....right before they fade the camera out as the poor kid is screaming his head off.
:

I hope the lesson sunk in for the guy having the buried penis repaired. It would truly break my heart to find out he would take a chance and circ his own sons.

Of course Dr. Li wanted to circ her son. She's a cosmetic surgeon, and that's what RIC is- cosmetic surgery. She just forgot that the patient needs to give his permission for surgery if it's to be ethical. If she has a girl next I can only assume that she'll give her breast implants right after birth. I mean, the baby will want them eventually, right? So might as well do it now before the baby can remember the pain of surgery.

yes, Dr. Li is the one who had the planned c-section for her convenience. I don't know what Dr. Rey's wife did- I'm pretty sure she had a vaginal birth with the second baby that he didn't attend b/c he was working, I saw her on the cell phone saying "yep he's born". and I know she FF from the start- but to her credit, it appears she does spend time playing with her children and does not use a nanny, which is actually remarkable for someone as rich as her living the gated community lifestyle.

I really think that's a slap in the face to what a Bris is supposed to be. If that was my religion I'd be jacked.
They blurred out the genital area? Terrible. Typical conservative American media. I saw the British documentary "It's A Boy!" totally uncensored on TVO (TVOntario), our OTA (over-the-air) provincial broadcaster.
: I LOVE THAT DOCUMENTARY and wished I hadn't erased it!!! I just don't understand the queasiness of the U.S. media like, censoring just the female gentials region and bare breasts. I feel fortunate Canadian broadcasters and cablers don't do this. I found the documentary, but the price totally shocked me! $195 to buy, $75 to rent.

one last complaint about this, at the beginning of each segment it says the patients name, age and procedure they want...

for the baby it said his name (max or david?), his age (3 days) and wants: circumcision

as if he wanted it

blech

LOL even Survivor has butt cracks pixelated. There's no chance they'll ever show anything as risque as a penis.
They bleeped Howard Stern *saying* the *word* penis on 60 minutes. Not shocked at all that they won't *show* one!

My guess is that the (OH so HOTTTT!
) Dr Rey is intact. He is from Brazil. I would hope his little boy is as well.

The irony is that they probably blurred it because it's a penis, not because it's a circ procedure. Even though the circ is a horrifying thing to have to watch IMO, but that probably has nothing to do with why it's censored.

Incidentally, DH and I were discussing this last night and he reminded me that he had to see a circ performed while we were in the hospital after my DD was born. He was watching after DD while they weighed, measured, poked and prodded her in a separate room from me. And, unfortunately, there was circ going on right near him. He said he wishes he never had to see it and was pretty upset by it (he was already anti-circ to begin with).
They are replayed often.

Circ. for hygenic purposes makes sense... about as much sense as cutting off your eyelids! erg!
