OK... I have no problem with this. I don't find it barbaric at all.

I don't know how they did it in this story, but IIRC when it used to be administered it was done by pouring hot tar on bare skin. In many cases it caused a lot of burns.
Anyway, I was curious so I looked it up on Wiki, and it does seem like an especially brutal form of punishment when done to bare skin. It also has quite a legacy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tar_and_feather I do find it a bit disturbing that this kind of punishment is still around.

Slightly OT, one of the most graphic things I ever saw on TV was when the tar-and-feathered a character on the HBO show Carnivale. He was a carny who was operating a ride that broke and a rider was killed. The implications were that he would have died a pretty horrible death from the act (if the 'hero' hadn't intervened with his healing powers).

Neither can I. It's awful. You can't even see his face in the photo. It would have had to have at least been warm. Cold tar is not pourable. Once it's on your skin, your pores can't breath or sweat properly. And tar fumes are really toxic.

I hope they catch who did it and punish them accordingly.

You do understand that "tarring and feathering" involves painfully hot tar, right?

The same is also sustained after thirty seconds of contact with 55 ºC (130 ºF) material. The tar of that period was of such a quality that it only melted at about 60 ºC (140 ºF). At temperatures of 60 °C (140 °F) burns can be created with a three second contact. The thin tar layer presumably cooled quickly; nevertheless, the victims possibly sustained some burns in addition to their humiliation.

I assume she didn't think it was the boiling hot kind. There are driveway sealants that don't have to be boiling hot to be pourable. I've used them (and had to help Dh scrub it off). Since no one has stepped forward and they don't have any proof of it other than pictures I don't think we can know what kind was used. Assuming it wasn't the kind that burns/hot, I do see the humor in it, or at least see the point they were trying to make. Drugs ruin lives, I have no respect for drug dealers. I lived across the street from a drug dealer for 2 years before they were finally booted. They had kids, little kids in the middle of all that, yet CPS wouldn't step in. Terribly sad. I don't want to wish brutality on people, but if it was the kind I'm thinking of, it would have only been a pain in the butt to get off. But we don't know the details so I'll refrain from official comment on it.

ummmm, can I just point out that this attack took place in Belfast, Northern Ireland. A place not noted for being quietly law abiding. I know, it's my hometown :

Even in this, IMO, unlikely scenario, I guess I still don't see the humor in recreating a punishment that is historically excruciatingly painful and often fatal.

How compassionate of you two....:

I really hope neither one of you knows what goes into tar and feathering, because gosh if you do and you said that than....nope does not compute.

My thoughts on this are awful, just a quote from the article....

He said frustration with the authorities' inaction over the alleged drug dealing had been building for weeks. Police had information but failed to intervene, he said.

This is so heinous, the guy did not get a trial and was punished in a cruel, outdated way. I wonder if he was guilty? I mean really this just scares the crap of me that these UDA people get to be judge, jury, and executioner yk? I feel so bad for that man, drug dealer or not NO ONE deserves this!

I think Polka may not be aware that it involves painfully hot tar, let's give her time to clarify.

I would normally delete things but several people quoted and I don't want to delete almost all the posts on the thread.

I should've clarified that I think the "PREMISE" is funny not exactly hot tar..
I guess I didn't see it was actually real hot tar.
I've seen a few college pranks/initiation called "tar & feather" when they really used "MAPLE SYRUP" & feathers from a old feather pillow.
I've seen chocolate syrup or honey used too. I assumed that what they used.
No one was serious hurt BUT I'm not a fan of torturous hazing either.
that's insane also.

Drug dealers don't rate too high in my book having many addicted friends & watching their struggles with meth, heroin & crack. A few died : Serious drug dealers get off way too easy in the US. I'm not talking Johnnywho sells a little on the weekend but the big business guys that included the pharma creeps that hid the facts the oxycontin is so highly addictive. We got kids dying left & right & killing old people over that stuff.

this was N. Ireland, right. I studied crime & it's consequences in different cultures/countries. It's all very different everywhere. What's goes in the US doen't fly elsewhere.

Seriously, I have no regard for child rapists/murderers like that Couey CREEP in FL that raped Jessica Lundsford & buried her. :

so pouring boiling hot tar is crazy in this case. sorry, I really thought they used syrup or honey .

cleared up?

I wasn't aware of the temperature of the tar... as the tar I know is the kind used to seal driveways and such... but as for the punishment, no, I really don't have a problem with that as drugs have seriously ruined my brother's life as well as that of my nieces and nephews. Drug dealers do not ruin one life, like a murderer, they ruin hundreds and thousands of lives. One person does this. Drugs don't just affect the person taking them, they affect their friends and family as well. I think that these days prisons are too cushy for many of the criminals, to be honest. I take issue with the fact that prisoners have shelter, air conditioning, TV (cable, often), and three hot meals per day when there are innocent people in the world (including children) who do not have these things.

Do I wish this person to be burned? No. Do I wish him to die from this? No. Do I think a bit of public humiliation and even pain in removing the tar is going to far? No, honestly I do not. Sorry.

If the mods want to delete the original post or my comments, I'm OK with that.

I understand. I guess the real issue is that how often could this punishment be undeserved? Who has the final word of guilty/not guilty? I mean, if he was on my street talking to my kids, I would be PI**ED and go at him myself.

BTW, tar comes off with baby oil and a bit of rubbing. At least the kind I'm familiar with.
