drying time/ are fitteds really worth it for a newborn?

I have a few weeks before my baby comes and I have small number of prefolds and fitteds, trying to decide whether to spend the remaining diaper $$ on more prefolds or more fitteds.

Advantages I see to going with more prefolds are: since newborns generally pee frequently, and in relatively small quantity, prefolds make more sense because they are cheaper and dry faster. Plus, if you're going coverless around the house they're less bulky too.

However, I've also heard that fitteds are great for newborns because if you're not the suavest prefold folder, the fitteds contain BF poop rather well.

Trouble is, the fitteds I've ordered (kissaluvs and bamboo from tiny birds) have taken WAY longer to dry than I anticipated. Seems like waste of energy.

I realize both have trade-offs and it's a personal decision, but I'd love to hear any thoughts on the matter!

wait til baby arrives and decide then.

each baby is different.
Yeah, if you have some of each already, I'd wait until baby arrives and you get a sense for what you're using more of, and then make your order.

Personally I can't stand fitteds (too bulky, don't save me that much time, take forever to dry) but I know some people love them. Also, I've never had trouble containing newborn BF poop in a prefold/wrap combo, and we don't even use pins or Snappis.

Thanks ladies.

What kind of covers do you use?

I will wait until baby is here to REALLY expand the stash, but as it is I barely have enough diapers to get through one day, so I need to get a few more of one kind or another to have on hand.

We have some Bummis Super Whisper Wraps that I've been liking for the newborn size. My favorite overall covers are Imse Vimse Bumpy Days, though. Very soft and breathable, and I like the wide Velcro strip on the front.
imo fitteds are definately worth it. yes they do take a long time to dry, but they keep the poo in so well!!!
We use prefolds for my once-a-week pooper! We don't have to deal with poop most of the time, but when she goes, she REALLY goes. We really haven't had trouble containing poop at all. It does get out of the prefold, but not a ton. We were using disposables, and the outfit she was wearing on poop day would just get covered. We have not had a blow-out of the diaper poop since we switched to cloth! We use proraps and thirsties covers for her.
I like both. I think I would do a doz more prefolds, and a few more fitteds just incase. I really like both for differetn reasons, and I go through phases where I will use all prefolds, or all fitteds, so like having both around.
Have you tried drying your fitteds with a clean, dry bath towel? That should help get those fitteds dry in one dryer cycle...
We used mostly prefolds with DS and decided to do all fitteds [kissaluvs] with DD. I do not regret the choice ONE BIT!! DD pooped a lot less than DS, even so the ease of using fitteds was so worth it. We didn't have a single blow out unless we were using the occasional sposie.
My fitteds all dry in one cycle. I dry on hot.
How long is 'one dry cycle?'

We do this too! It is a great time saver.
I want to add that I also LOVE the IV bumpy covers! They are up there with my Ricky wraps, WWB, and Bummis.
As far as poop goes...I just hate rinsing poops out of my prefolds, IME it is easier to rinse it out of the fitteds. They do cost more and tend to be bulky, but they are nice to have around. That said I really love my pockets and I am starting to get addicted to AI2s.

I agree with this!

I love fitteds. They are great. Very great. Especially when your lil one gets wiggly and you need something fast (if you do those fancy PF folds that is). My DD is a toddler, but still runs around coverless in a fitted a lot. That being said, a big bonus of prefolds is that you can use them for stuffers/doublers later on.

I have only liked 1 cover that I've gotten, and that was the one I made myself from diaperkits.com. It doesnt look perfect, but it covers the whole fitted/contains the PF better than the others I used.

For those of you who are sold on fitteds for newborns, do you change the diaper with every pee? Seems like you would go through a lot of fitteds just for small pees.

My nbs pee a lot. Soak a KL0 in one pee no problem. I do change with every pee. I thin 2 doz or so with another 2 doz prefolds is a good number to have.
