DH and I never gave DS a pacifier. Never even bought them. I consider it a tool to satisfy the non-nutritive sucking needs of bottle-fed infants. I know it sounds silly, but I was always so glad that I could proudly say that DS had never had a pacifier. He's always been a thumbsucker, which I have no problem with, since he only does it when he's tired, upset, or in the car.

Well, I went to daycare today to pick DS up. He was facing away from me. I called his name and he turned around and in his mouth was --- a PACIFIER!!! Turns out he had been stealing them regularly from the other kids. I guess he sees it as a detachable thumb. I wish the daycare had mentioned it to me before, but they probably see it as no big deal since they so rarely get kids who aren't allowed pacifiers.

Could this mean I'm not nursing him enough? He seems perfectly happy with 2-3 times a day, lately more often 2 than 3. Or is he just copying the other kids, who all have pacifiers?

I'm so glad he's switching into the toddler class next month, where they don't allow pacifiers!

My DD did this for a bit. I think she found it a curiosity to see other kids with this big thing sticking out of the middle of their faces, and she was curious. What's a toddler to do, but grab it and try it out? LOL! I wouldn't freak out over it. The daycare folks probably didn't say anything because it's common occurance in a group setting, and it freaks the parents out.

I bet he just sees it as a toy that you CAN put in your mouth!
My DD did the same thing- we never gave her any but for some reason we had a bunch from my baby shower someplace in the house- when she was 2 and her sister was born and all the baby stuff was out- she found one- and walked around thinking she was "Ms. Cool!"
