My DS was born 15 days ago and yesterday evening we brought him into the ER for some fast breathing, by 8 am this morning he was having open heart surgery to correct a heart defect that he was born with. Having him in the CVICU has been really scary but the nurses are great. He came out of surgery at 1:55 pm today and is doing well but needs to stay stable tonight. Has anyone BTDT? I'm still feeling really confused and I'm in disbelief - it's a lot to take in. He was fine yesterday and now today he's fighting for his life.

Oh mama I can only imagine what you're going thru. The first night is the toughest to get thru. That is tough, one day you are baby mooning and the next setting up at the Ronald McDonald house as your baby fights for his life.

I am glad this was discovered and as I read your thread, you and dh were adament that they check further.

Although, I havent been thru surgery with either of my children, I know the emotional rollar coaster feeling you have since Maggie spent 3 mos in the nicu.
Another mama friend IRL went thru what you did but it was caught at a 3 mo well baby visit.
We are praying for you, your dh, and your precious baby...

I'm sorry you are going through this with your sweet baby boy. I hope he had a healthy night and improves quickly so he can come home, where he belongs.

he stayed stable last night. We're here in the waiting room just waiting to talk to the cardiologist this morning. I think the goal for today is to work on starting to get him off the vent soon.

My son had PDA ligation which is the closure of the vessel going from the heart to lungs. I only allowed myself to believe that my son would live and recover from surgery. Surgery was so nerve-wracking and I was worried about scars and any pain that the baby could be in, but I also knew that there were no other options. They went through his ribs on the side underneath his shoulderblade. The nurses really watched to make sure Noah was not in any pain, of course I was watching too. DS improved right after the surgery with his blood pressure and started gaining weight as well. He did retain a little bit of fluid but it looked cute on him, it went right to his cheeks. He also needed to stay on the vent for about 5 days because sometimes babies can get a hole in the lungs just from the surgery and Noah had 2 holes. I was told that they always heal and sure enough they did. He had this surgery on Christmas Eve and now the scar is just a wrinkle on his back. Babies heal really well and I am happy that there is knowledge out there to help little babies like ours! It is miraculous! I will keep you and yours in my thoughts.
