My 10 month old almost EBF ds has been having problems lately going to the bathroom. I had to give him a glycerin suppository on this past Tuesday because he hadn't gone in 8 days, you had to see what came out after the suppository! He's been grunting and straining again since and still no sign of any bm. I'm currently taking floradix floravitals iron tonic because I'm anemic, could this be making him constipated? I've tried giving him pear juice, apple jiuce, watermelon and nothing works. What should I do?

Try probiotics. I use Metagenics UltraFlora. You can buy it at LuckyVitamin.com. It's kind of pricey, but it works very well. You can just put like 1/8 of the capsule in their mouth (the powder, not the capsule, obviously) or even more for your DS because he's older. You could also add it to some expressed milk or water or whatever he drinks. It's magic, I swear.

How's your water intake? That can affect him. Floradix is supposed to have the non-constipating iron in it, so I doubt that's the issue, plus iron supplements don't translate through your breastmilk, I thought?

When he's able to go without aid, is the consistency still soft? Or is it hard? If the poop is hard, then he's constipated and I'd look to your/his diet (bananas, rice, cheese, other binding foods) and water intake to see if that could help.

You could also try a small amount of organic prune juice, mixed with either breastmilk or filtered water. That should help.

We've also used the Earths Best organic prunes and oatmeal food before to help our babe along when she's having a rough time. Works great! I dislike the notion of jarred baby foods, but that one tastes pretty darn good and works like a charm.

HTH!

our son was going through the same thing. he was about 9 1/2 months, and exclusively breastfed. you may not want to hear this, but it wasn't until we introduced solids that he started having regular bms again. before that, not only did he hardly ever poop, he was also hungry all the time, and had slowed significantly in growth. it's definitely something to consider.
