I think it was over X-mas that I read a post about booster seats vs. 5 point harnesses. One of the mommas that replied posted a link to a youtube video about a little boy who died because the seatbelt failed and he flew out of his booster in an accident. My MIL wants to buy DS a booster for their car because it is cheaper, we are a Britax family. I can't guarantee that she'll use our car seat even if I install it for her.

If anyone remembers this thread or you were the momma who posted the link could you please tell me where I can find it? I have gone through all of the posts back to 12/1/07 and searched and I can't find it to save my life.

TIA!!

I don't have a link, but search for Kyle. That's the name of the boy. And they have a foundation to help families buy higher weight limit seats.

Does your MIL want to buy your not quite 2 year old (we share a b-day!) a booster? I'd get a carseat and take her to a carseat tech to install it, so that she can hear it from an expert. I'd even give the tech a call before your appt and tell them that MIL wants to use a booster. They can then direct more of their comments to her. It may also be illegal to put an under 4 year old in a booster in your state.

And if MIL wouldn't use a carseat, she would NEVER see my child unsupervised.

Ditto.

I just put my 4 year old in a booster when she was 4.5 and 45 lbs and 45 inches. I would never have put her in one before that.

A 2 yr old does not belong in a booster. Period, ever. My 3.5yr old is still RF.

And I agree- no carseat, no time alone with the child. Period.

This mother was on my due date club March 02 on Babycenter. It was horrible that one of our babies died. I'm glad she's doing something and that they figured out why he flew out of the car. I remember her confusion saying "I had just buckled him in 5 minutes before..."

Good for you for sticking to your guns with the carseat issue!
I don't plan to use a booster with my kids till they're at least six, but I don't think Kyle's story would convince me if I were pro-booster. I feel horribly for his family, but he died because his seatbelt failed. If he had been in a car seat that was installed with the same seat belt, he probably would've died also. Am I missing something?

It seems like it would make more sense to show your MIL crash test videos of carseats vs. boosters. A seatbelt failing has got to be really rare. She might not think it's much of a risk.

I hope this doesn't sound rude at all. I don't mean it to be.

There's also a video called Belle's Gift about a 3yo in a booster (Australia), and was fatally injured because the belt did not fit her properly.

Riversong, not necessarily. With a booster seat, the seatbelt is the only protector. With a 5pt harnessed seat that is also tethered, there would be extra protection that could have indeed saved his life.

Also, unfortuntaly, seatbelt failure is not all that rare.

No, it's not extremely rare. I think it even mentions that fact in the video.

Also, a booster cannot be tethered to the car where a 5 pt harness can.

I forgot about the tether. Thanks for mentioning it.

If it's not rare for a seatbelt to fail, that makes me nervous.

I just watched Belle's Gift and re-watched Kyle's video. They're both so sad.

Here's a crash test of a booster and a 5 pt harness. The dummy in the booster is much bigger than a 2yo, though.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2kO8...eature=related

Maybe she feels intimidated about you being a Britax family. There is a Fisher-Price carseat that is essentially a Marathon with less padding. Maybe you could refer her to that. My in laws constantly insist the Levi is too big for his 5pt/booster combination seat yet his convertible seat fits just fine. Um, no.

the only state where that would even be close to legal is Florida they only require a 5pt harness till 3 but MOST states require the child be AT LEAST 4 yo and 40lbs to move into a booster... so if your mil ever drops ds off and has switched your properly installed 5pt seat for a booster I'd call the cops and ask them to come ticket her...... and then never let MIL be alone with ds as she obviously can make good decisions
