I am searching the archives and so forth but wondered if someone can summarize the pros/cons of either. The information can just be so overwhelming. My baby is due for shots in a month and DH and I are at odds. I am not going to be able to convince him to go vax free so I need to find a reasonable compromise. She is going to have to go into daycare for 3 days a week when she is 4 months old so this must be taken into account.

My doc did say he works with folks who don't vaccinate and his own opinion of the CDC schedule was that if we were to do any, it would be DTaP, Hib and PCV (forgoing HepB (we did not vaccinate in hospital), Rota and IPV.

If I do these, I would want to not have them all in one day but not sure what is a good combo.

And given the stuff I have read on Pertussis, what about just DT? Does it contain mercury?

This is such a nightmare.

I am not yet decided on pertussis. I just read one woman's delayed/selective vax approach and she was dead against the P in DTaP and chose DT instead. I am not sure why she was so against it. Hence my post....?

The pertussis vaccine is highly reactive and not very effective.

Honestly it sounds like you've just barely started to research- I strongly suggest not doing any vaccines until you've done a LOT more research. You can always vax later, you can never take them back.

good luck!

I believe this is EVERYTHING in the schedule, except for the HepB, so it sounds like he thinks all of them are important.

I have been doing my research... but honestly getting good information is hard as there is so much opinion on both sides. As for research... where you look seems to be what you will find. It's frutrating.

Do you have something you want to tell me about pertussis? would appreciate it.

Lastrid, no that is not everything in the schedule. Please re-read... he is suggesting if we skipped any, it would be Rota, Hep B and Polio, leaving only 3.

Thanks Grumpybear... I thought I recalled reading that; appreciate the confirmation. So this person was comfortable forgoing DTaP for DT. Wonder if they were aware of the thimserol? Who knows.

Okay- take a deep breath and plan for this to take MONTHS. You need to research each disease and each vaccine. At a bare minimum, you need to research and fully understand:

For each disease:
how many cases
When
where
how is it treated
what are the common complications
how likely are those complications
what is the chance of lasting issues or death

For each vaccine:
is it available individually or just in combo
what combo
ingredients
side effects
efficacy of vaccine
when is it given
how many doses
when it was introduced and why

Then you take all that information *FOR EACH DISEASE AND VAX* and compare. So you gather all that info on pertussis and on pertussis vaccines and compare.

Most of that information is available from the CDC though it takes a LOT of digging to find it.

Start with one disease and when you have specific questions that you can't find answers to- come and ask questions.

hope that helps!

this is always a good site to look up, it's quite the reality check to look at the numbers.

CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report

Kidspiration, I have seen that chart and when I was showing DH it, he got upset and said for instances of low numbers, this was quite possibly due to vaccinations and no indication of the seriousness or prevalence of the disease.

I have looked at other surveillance charts and look at low instances of death or what not in some diseases and the same questions comes to mind... is the lower number due to the disease not being so serious (perhaps the disease being vaccinated for is not as "dangerous" as it is portrayed) or is the low number due to the efficacy of vaccination programs for that disease is attested to in the lower death rate or risky/serous side effects of disease?

you're right. just looking at the disease prevalence surely isn't enough information to even BEGIN to make an informed decision about vaccination. my main point of bringing it up was to shed a little light on how seldom these diseases occur in our country that has a population of over 300 million people. also, the chart is a snapshot in time, and if you look at the history of disease and the history of vaccines, all of the vaccine available diseases were decreasing in incidence way before vaccines were ever introduced, due to other factors such as improved sanitation and nutrition for instance.

if your husband is getting upset, then clearly he is making this decision from an emotional vs. rational state...and quite frankly, that is a problem. fear is not remotely a good enough reason to vaccinate. truly, fear is not a good reason to not vaccinate, either.

it appears from your questions and responses that you and your husband have a lot of research ahead of you. alegna outlined a great strategy on how to attack this whole business in a previous post.

Is this for your DC's 2month check up? If your husband is pretty sure he wants to vax, he might be like mine was...making decisions without really researching anything!! A suggestion would be to look at the list below and print out EACH package insert (just google the name or they are listed on many vax info sites). That way, if you to decide TO vax you are making an informed choice as to which vaccine (and manufacuturing co) you are choosing for your child. The package inserts also contain ino on the diseases, how they are contracted, and they touch on adverse reactions. All the ones I've seen so far have the statement about not being tested on whether they are carcionogenic or could impair fertility... (that's reason enough for me to say no...but everyone is on their own journey). Good luck!!

Hep B: Energix-B, Recombivax

Rotavirus: RotaTeq

DTaP: Daptacel, Infanrix,Tripedia

HIB: ACTHib,PedvaxHib

IPV: Ipol

Pneumococcal: Prevnar

COMBO VACCINES:

DTaP/HepB/IPV: Pediarix

HepB/HiB: Comvax

to the op, i have charts from our pediatrician that show vaccines have nothing to do with the deceases in illnesses.
i have scanned it for you. these diseases were already naturally dying out.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...k/vaccines.jpg

if you want in depth information about these graphs, watch this video:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...54679207090010
