DS had been on a delayed vax schedule until we moved to Canada when I stopped vaxing altogether. He has one dose of DTaP left in his series.

DD has not had any vaxes yet, and I'm loathe to give her any due to persistant wheezing and reactive airway disease symptoms. BUT... because of these very symptoms I'm quite worried about her getting Pertussis.

DS starts preschool next week and I'm wondering if I should get his remaining DTaP shot in the hopes of reducing his chances of getting pertussis and bringing it home.

Unfortunately, here in British Columbia you can only get the DTaP in combo with other vaxes. The best option would be to get the DTaP + IPV.

So I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on whether to finish DS's series of DTaP... Will this help reduce the risk of DD getting Pertussis? Should DH and I get boosters too?

I really fear for her breathing this winter!

TIA

If it were me, I probably would and I have also had a baby with lots of lung and breathing issues so I understand how scarey and awful that it!

The current pertussis vax isn't very effective. There have been outbreaks left and right in Canada and the States. They're supposed to be working on a new vaccine, but I have no idea if they have an improved one on the market yet.

Thanks for the feedback.

Is the ineffectiveness of the current vaccine what you were referring to, Alegna?

I have been doing a tiny bit of reading about Sodium Ascorbate and its use in the treatment/prevention of pertussis. Anyone have experience with or thoughts on this?

No. That's a whole separate issue. The way the vaccine is designed it simply does not prevent infection and transmission. It simply attempts to prevent the more serious effects. It does nothing at all to prevent transmission.

Mostly to add another voice to the choir, I too, believe that the pertussis vaccination is ineffective. The kids who get it are vaccinated school children. I don't think that vaxing either child with a 4-in-1 vax is a healthy idea.
But, that's just my opinion.

Technically, when thet designed the DTaP, they were going for prevention of transmission. It just hasn't worked out like that. The bacteria is "smarter" then anyone was expecting. (it oozes various toxins to evade an immune response, so your immune system cells can't quite "grab" it to "eat" it based on pre-formed vaccine immunity).

I think she was meaning how in Canada you can only get the DTaP combined with IPV?

Polio, the injected form. (OPV is oral polio, just FYI.)
