Dumbest Q ever about rice socks

885 Views 12 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  gemasita
Um... don't judge me... HOW do I make one? What kind of rice? And, what exactly are they good for?

I know this is the dumbest question ever. But please humor me and reply.

Put rice in a sock and sew up the end. Or a small pillowcase could also be used. I have a little pig with a flax seed it in.

Kind of rice: I like organic Bazmati---I like how it smells heated.

Rice socks are good for aching anything, or something warm to cuddle with.

You can put it in the microwave, I usually wrap it in a kitchen towel, and heat for a minute or two....someone may have more specific directions.

It feels divine on an aching back or a sore foot or an aching tummy....
Even an earache.

You can use a long tube sock. Fill it with rice, NOT instant or minute rice, the cheap kind. Then, tie a knot in the end of the sock. I sometiems add a handful of lavender buds to make it smell yummy!
Just as those gals said, or you can sew your own bigger ones. I make mine with fleece or flannel. Buy whatever cheap, long grain rice I find. Sometimes through in lavender.

i sew rice socks for all my clients. i took all my dd's old receiving blankets (after 3, there were LOADS of 'em!) and make the socks out of those. i add lavender and bring it to the birth and then they can take it home to keep.
One tip: Do not use old socks!!! When I was pg with dd I made 2 rice socks from old odd socks to use during labor. These had been laundered, of course, but the heating released the worst old sock/foot smell!! Combined with the lavendar eo I'd used...shudder...it was not something I wanted to smell while in labor.

If you choose to use socks, make sure they're new!!

On the topic of stench:

I had been using a brown-rice filled sock for a few weeks during the end of my pg, and after quite a few heat-ups in my microwave, it became clear that my higher-fat brown rice was rancid. Gag.

Hmm...I used DH's old socks and didn't have any trouble. I guess his feet aren't as stinky as they used to be.

Whatever you do, don't substitute beans for rice. My midwife scorched my rice sock in the microwave so she pulled out a bean heating pad that someone had made her. Ya, that was great. The aroma of Taco Bell while I'm trying to labor.

i've found that if you use fleece, it retains the moisture released by the rice as it heats and makes a nice moist compress. it feels really good.
I use a hand towel folded in half and sewn.

Used it during my last labor, felt so good to hold it to my tummy during contractions.
I used one a lot of the time while in labor. I'm not sure I'd advise using lavender though, for labor, as the smell of lavender made me really nauseous. (My sweet midwives put some lavender oil in the water of my birth pool and unfortunately my sensitive smeller didn't like it

One of my clients made her own with lavender in it and it made her nauseous. If I were going to make one for a client, I wouldn't put any smelly stuff in it cuz you never know!
