I am going to go from WA to Dallas then 5 days later Dallas to UK and back 3 weeks later with a 21 month old on my lap yikes!!!!!!

Anyone know about buying an portable DVD player you can use in flight? I have looked on line and they are $100 to $200 and am thinking it would be worth it! Do they come with headsets for more than one person? Do I glue it onto her head?!!!!!?(jk) Just wondering before I buy it if it would work or not. Thanks!

Any other ideas to keep her occupied?!! She is very ummm active but we did it last year and she was ok at 11 months or so.

Check out the company In Motion (I'm pretty sure that's what they're called). They are in most of the major airports, and they rent out DVD players and DVDs (although you only get one free DVD so you should bring your own if you'll want more). You pick it up at one airport and then return it at your destination airport. If your destination airport doesn't have one of their kiosks, you can mail it in for a few extra dollars. It's cheap too - under $20.

We tried this one time with dd; she historically has never been interested in TV, but we were desperate. Sadly, she wasn't any more interested in the rented DVD player either, but I think with most other kids it would be great!

We bought one for Dakota to use on trips only. He does not get it unless we are going to be in the car for more than 2 hours. I got it on Ebay for under $50.00. It has jacks for 2 headsets. My daughter has one in her car that has two screens and two headset so her kids each have their own screen. They have it on every time the car pulls out of the driveway. I think that's a bit much. Just make sure that you get a really sturdy headset. Little hands like to twist them around a lot.

we had great success with our dvd player but dd is a tv gal to begin with. we started getting her used to the headphones a few weeks before & that helped a lot. we brought her favorites (sesame street, etc.) & she had a ball. we also use it on long car trips (over 2 hours) & it really helps!

Hmm, I think for my guy it would become an full-of-drool airborne projectile within minutes, but perhaps your toddler isn't quite like that. If it worked for you, might as well try it again!

I think I am going to buy one since its 4 long flights on multiple planes and we travel a lot anyhow, she does not watch much TV but has some mother goose DVD's and also Signing Time she really loves so can take those and maybe a new one. I have had to hide A Shark's Tale though and she loves Fern Gully DH just got for her. I think anything to make this trip easier!!

We bought one for a three hour flight when our son was almost 3. Best money we ever spent! Great in the car for long rides too. Get the car adapter. Be sure to charge the battery well though. I think the limit is only 3 hours or so! So for a long flight it might be a downer if the battery dies. Maybe pay for an extra one? We got the headphones which is the only sane way to use it in the car or else the sound will make you crazy while driving.

If you can't find a player with dual headphone ports, you can buy a little connector/spliter at Radio Shack for like 2 bucks.

DVD players save our sanity! We are a no TV family, and we are strict on video use at home. But we travel a lot, and there are no rules on how many DVDs are allowed on a flight! They make life a LOT easier!!

I could not drive anywhere more than an hour away without our DVD player!! It was a lifesaver when DS was very small...he HATED the car. Now it's great for plane trips and long car trips. I don't know how anyone ever lived without one LOL (but then again I am also often the only adult travelling with the kids!).

We spent around $200 on one and use it for vacations or car rides over an hour. It has definately been worth the money.

We use it for long car rides.....normally don't use it on the airplane, but could. My only fear is she'll throw a tantrum if the captain says it has to be turned off and she is in the middle of an exciting video. Once we got delayed by a few hours in the airport and after exhausting all other activities we could come up with, she sat in the terminal and watched it. It was a lifesaver!

We also use it when we get to our destination as a way to play her nighttime lullabyes as she is going to sleep.

It was a lifesaver for us on our last long trip. Both in the plane and during the 8 hour delay we had when our return flight was cancelled! I agree that you need sturdy earphones. Also, don't plan on videos that she normally would sing along with because you will quickly get rude comments from others. And definitely make sure you have a stock of really short videos for the end of the flight so something is likely to end about the time you have to turn it off for landing.

Have a fun trip.

Another DVD lover here too. We bought ours about 2 years ago, when they were fairly new. It is worth its weight in gold. It has saved our sanity on many long car rides and plane rides! I couldn't have flwon with both my kids by myself withoutt it.

HEre's my trick for when they tell you to turn off and stow portable electronic devices...I turn it off, tell the kids to say goodbye to Blues Clues or whatever we're watching, then whip out a juice box or box of raisins or some snack. Works out pretty well. They forget about losing their movie and focus on drinking their juice or whatever.

We have a Polaroid, and its great. The thing absolutely does not skip. We broke it once, but since we bought the 4 year extended warranty on it from Best Buy, they replaced it free of charge, no questions asked.

I also want to know what specific brands/models people recommend. I want to get this as a family Chirstmas gift this year. Our son watches almost zero TV, as we don't have a set at home but he LOVES watching videos at his grandparents' house, so I think it would be wonderful for car trips. I've been trying to figure out which one to buy and it's hard to know. I want the kind of case that is both a carrying case and also can be hung from the back of the front car seat. I don't want him to have to hold it in his hands cause he might throw it, kwim?

We bought a Mintek 7in. for dd at Costco for about $150.00 and it really worked great. She was about your dc's age.Somehow the time seemed to fly on our 5 hour and 3 hour flights. For all the flying you're doing dc will be flying the plane soon!Don't forget to sign up for frequent flyer miles.

My son is 24 months old and he totally loves his travel aquadoodle. You fill the pen with water and they can "write" over and over again.
