The easiest way if you are just doing a few(or doz or so) is to go to JoAnn's or Michaels or somethign and get the tye-dye kit, or individual colors. The directions and everything you need should be included, and they are pretty inexpensive.
I think the brands are usuall, rainbow rock, dylon, or something similar. I would stay away from rit, it is not a great dye.

Have fun. I did a few for one of my kiddos, and it wasn't too hard.

The other option is to go to www.dharmatrading.com and get the supplies from there. They have lots to read about on the subject of dying and they have blanks too, so you can even get tiny t-shirts and stuff to dye to match the prefolds.

it does not affect absorbancy or anything - and if you get the dylon or rainbow rock dyes or the dharma dyes, you should not have any problems with irritation either. It is lots of fun to do.

some tips - red is a difficult color. Rinse the heck out of it and wash, wash, wash it because it is the WORST color for bleeding. If you can get some synthropol from Dharma, that will be the best thing for you to wash them out with because it pulls the excess dye out.

Above all, do NOT get the RIT dyes - those are horrible and will bleed out.

hth and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me

yes it does - but if you are only doing a few prefolds, you will spend more money on dye than it will be worth unless you plan on dying a bunch of other things as well. If you just got a few colors and did like 3 or 4 prefolds in each color, it woldn't be so bad. You could also experiment a little and do some dip dying to mix it up a bit

yeah, dying with dylon is pretty fun. I suggest using more salt than they recommend and to leave it in longer too. Definitely keep stirring in the first few minutes or else it will get blotchy and only do a few per packet or else it will come out uneven. I love all my dyed prefolds and people are always impressed when I tell them I dyed them
My tiny heiny's will always be my favorite though
she's growing out of them though

Ok, official thread hijack coming up--

Does anyone know about dying prefolds with Kool-Aid? I know you would use the unsweetened kind in the single packets (
I used to be one of those people who dyed their hair with Kool-Aid, and that's what we used) but how much water would you use, and would you want it to be hot or cold? Anyone have any ideas?

Ok, un-hijacking now, to say that I agree with the PP who recommended Dharma dyes... I love them, and they have great colors

YOu can't use kool aid for plant fibers. It can be used for animal fiber(why it worked on your hair). The most it would do to cotton or hemp is to stain it, and it woul dwash out pretty quick. Sorry!!

Oh well, I thought I had read something about this, but maybe they were talking about dying wool soakers or something...

I can't wait to see pics of your pretty new prefolds, SBradbury!

Yeah, you can use it to dye wool fibers.
It turns out pretty good, I still like the professional dyes better though.
