Hello,
Well, my son now has his first vaccine. He is 15 months old and this morning hit his inside of his lip on a galvanized tub outside, and was bleeding profusely. We didn't know what to do so we took him to the E.R.

We were asked by 3 different people to see if he "was up to date on his vaccinations", and he isn't. We had not vaccinated him until today.

They "highly" recommended that we vaccinate him and they insisted on giving him his Tetanus shot before we left the hospital. They offered the DTP and the DT shot, so we chose the DT, because we figured less is better.

It was a very hard thing for us. We felt really conflicted when we were at the E.R. because you have all these "professionals" looking at you like you're crazy that you haven't vaccinated.

So, here's the question, do I start him in on the schedule for the DT shot? Or should I just go on my merry way, like we have been doing, and not give him anymore vaccinations?

Also, is DT better than DTP? I sure hope so. I asked about thimersol and they said, "They don't make vaccines with that any more." I sure hope they don't!!!

Also, any recommends on what to do now that he has this in his system. I bought some Vitamin C to give him, and am hoping this will help his body.

I feel sad for him. He has such a healthy body and strong immune system, I hope this doesn't alter it.

Thanks for any advice Mommas!

I am so sorry that this happened to you! My youngest was hit in the mouth when he was twelve months. He was hurt so badly that I thought he broke his nose or jaw. Blood was everywhere! I took him to the ER and the ER did nothing!

NOTHING!

They simply asked me if he was up to date on his vaxes and I answered,"He is completely taken care of", (as far as I was concerned).

Next thing I knew, I was surrounded by seven LAPD. They did NOT ask me what happened - they asked me about my three older children (to take them away), so I refused to answer any more of their questions.

Long story short, I went home eleven hours later. HIs mouth was still bleeding; I was given a referral to a dentist which I did not need since I already had a family dentist. HIs front deciduous teeth later abcessed, were pulled, and now his perm;anent teeth will be receiving fillings in NOvember.

As for your DS, give him lots of vitamin C to keep his immune system up. ... and yes DT is better that DPT since the P or pertussis portion of the vaccine has been connected to permanent brain damage in some people.

Next time, you know what to say...if they ask for a vax record at the ER, ooops you forgot it in the excitement!

JUst to add...

I had one vax as a child - a tetanus shot for a dog bit when I was eight....the T portion.

That was the only shot I ever received.

I am still here.

I'm sorry you had to go through this. I know how hard it is to go into the ER with an unvaxed child. You have my sympathy.

Sometimes, you just have to pick your battles. You win some, you lose some, and only you know what you can handle. I know in the case of broken bones or cuts or punctures where tetnus could be present, it is almost impossible to escape some kind of DT or tetnus shot.

If you are ever in this situation again, know that you can refuse a shot or any other kind of procedure for your child. The doctors/nurses/staff work FOR you. It's not martial law in there, even though it feels like that a lot. You do have the final say, it's just sometimes it can be a long and hard battle.

It's not easy to stand up to vax happy people, especially when they're tossing around words like death, brain damage, paralysis, etc if you don't vax. But you can do it, and get out of there. You might have to be cold hearted, emotionless, and more stubborn than a mule, but in the end, they can only do what you say. They won't be happy, but that's not your problem.

And, if for some reason CPS is called, it's my understanding that most states have laws where not vaxing is not neglect. So they can't do much except harass.

Miriam's suggestion for C is good. You could also give him cod liver oil if you can get it in him. Also, the brand Nature's Way makes acidophilous (refrigerated) for kids that you can mix in any kind of liquid that will help his system clean out.

It's going to be all right. When my ds was sick and hospitalized last spring, he had to take two different antibiotics for a little bit, and my biggest fear and sadness was that his immune system was permanently damaged from all the drugs and the stress.

I gave him tons of vit C and probiotics (acidophilous) and he bounced back and has been so healthy ever since.

I'm sorry you and ds went through this.... if I had this happen to me and I ended up giving ds a tetanus shot I would then go on my merry way.... I would skip the rest of the shots.

I could have written your post well nearly...my dd was 18 months and was bit by a rabbit...deep to the bone of her finger. BUT I was told that the dT vax would do nothing at that point. I was told she had to have a TIG vax (made from immune human blood). I've was so so upset! She was fine after. We then decieded to fallow up on the T (which you have to get with d until the age of 5 years) but with her first dT vax she had a reaction! I couldn't believe it!
Hugs to you and yes lots of Vit C

Hi peaceful mama!
This is exactly why I started the *know your hospital thread*,which unfortunately got no response.Did you get the brand name/lot number of the vaccine your child got? This is the only way to know if your child got a thimerosal vaccine. They are lying when they say there are no thimerosal vaccines.

What gets me is the push to give a DT to an unvaccined child following an injury when the DT will do NOTHING to prevent tetanus in that child if tetanus is present.Did they also give the TIG(pooled antibodies from other humans?).If not then the shot was just their way of getting one vaccine into your child at a vulnerable moment for you.

Personally I would not continue with the series, but that is your call.Sodium ascorbate is a good call.Maybe some homeopathy and vitA.

Big hugs for you and the little one, and more power to you the next time you face the white coats!
Sara
ps.My son had quite a cut on his thumb at age 8 months. The ped and I handled it with steri strips and butterfly closures(though a stich or 2 could have been useful).I have little doubt the vax pressure I would have faced that day had I taken my unvaxed boy to the ER.Our ped never mentioned tetanus, though he did give antibios which ds never took.

Thanks for all the responses! Man, I wish I would have insisted on seeing the contents of the vaccine, especially now that I know that they do have thimersol in the DT shot.

I didn't get the name of the brand or the Lot # of the vaccine they gave him. Do you think it's too late to find out? It happened yesterday. Do they chart information like that at the E.R. What do I do now that this vaccine might have thimersol in it.

I'm getting little bits of Vitamin C down him and I'm hoping this will help!

I'm just sooo bummed I took him to the E.R. We walked away with the recommendation of Tylenol and a 1st vaccine. From here on out, I will think quite a bit about taking him to the E.R. again if he's injured (how sad is that???).

I think the scariest part was I was afraid to say "no" to the Dr. because of the threat that they may turn us in to Child Protection Services. The thought that someone could take away my baby is more than I can handle. Isn't our health system so messed up?

Again, thanks for all the great info. and for letting me vent.

I was reading through some of the older posts and the one by seahorse(their TT experience for their dd) and Hilary mentioned selenium to help pull out the metals.Brazil nuts have a good amount of selenium. You can grind them up and add to foods.
Remember, if you say "yes, he/she is up to date" they will rarely- if ever-check that out (which is almost impossible to check anyway!!). DS and DH were in a bad accident Friday (hit by a tractor trailer and flipped several times). Amazingly, DS -age 2) is completely unharmed! And (thankfully in some ways) the hospital didn't even officially check DS out!!!!!!!!! I was worrying they'd ask about vax b/c DH would say he is not. But nothing-whew!

This is what I was thinking on my way home for the E.R. When they asked if his immunizations were up to date, I should of replied, "Yes" because isn't his immune system "up to date"? His immune system seems to be doing a pretty good job keeping him healthy and immunizing him against diseases, without their vaccines. Is this logical thought?

Sara29, thanks for the idea of brazil nuts. We'll go to the store tonight and buy some to mix in with his oats.

I have been trying to get the vitamin C down him. Yesterday I resorted to buying him Vitamin C gummy bears....because the liquid would go in his mouth and back out again.

Sodium Ascorbate is the form of Vitamin C that is properly utilized by the body with the added bonus of coming in a powdered form that can easily be mixed in with a small amount of juice.

Is it the lemon flavored Vit C tablets?

I did not think they had very much in them -you would have to eat a whole bottle or 2 .

They did taste good!

I am currently out of the hylands,so I am just guessing that it is 25mg per 2 tablets. I will have to go look over at vitacost.com.
My kids COULD eat the whole bottle.Ds(16mo) brings me the bottle and does sign language for *more, more*
As an Emergency Room nurse, no, we do not chart Lot#/Vial# of the DT. they very well might have the vial they drew from (we keep ours loose in the fridge, like you would insulin, kwim?)....the only problem is that sometimes we have 2 or three vials open and in use at any given time for all the dog bites, stictches, and broken bones the dept sees on any given day.

My advice to anyone that doesnt want to deal with the ER about vaxing is say "yes" when they ask if vaccinations are up to date. I suppose some of you dont want to lie, some of you want to make a point, but if you really dont want the hassle, just say yes, its not like we ask for shot records. Its just part of the triage note, a box where we circle "Y" or "N".

I am sorry this happened to you. We have not had either one of our children vaccinated. One is almost 4 and the other is almost 2. We took our youngest to the doctor for some sores in his mouth and they asked us if we were up to date. The doctor came in and told me it was illegal unless it was against my religious belief's. They turned us in to the department of family services and we went thru a big ordeal. Needless to say the case was dismissed because it is perfectly legal not to vaccinate. Don't let them tell you other wise. You make the decisions for your children, not the doctors.
