I have chosen not to vaccinate my children for our own personal reasons. Anyhow I have 3 daughters, 2 older which had their ears pierced as babies. And I wanted to get my youngest daughter, now 3 1/2 mos old done.
Last night I took her to the mall and found a place that does ear piercing, i listend to their whole blurb on care for the ears and all, then i went to sign my life away when i read a section that wanted to know when she had her last vaccine. I said to the lady, she hasnt had any. WELL. she flipped and ripped the paper up said she refused to do it. Fair enuf, it just simply never ocurred to me there was a problem with this. I mean she was using sterile equiptment and wearing gloves and all. SOOO now I am looking for some feedback on what other non vaxing moms think. Please do not ridicule me for this but my first born had seizures after he was vaccinated and it has me sooo worried and I have done my research I know my risks of not vaccinating. Would you get them done?? my other girls are fine and i never really ever gave it a second thought. When is a good age to do them? I mean i did my othrs young and they never played with them or pulled them they were just there and they only fussed for a minute then they were fine so i wanted them done early. I am just in debate now whether to go ahead and find someone who will do it or not to bother at all??
Thankyou in advance

I wished that I had a choice. My ears were peirced when I was 6 so I sorta knew what was happening. But I wish that I was older so I could have understood the decision. I would never take the choice away from my children. I will let them decide if they want holes in their body. Only when they are old enough to understand. I think even 6 is too young to understand. My much younger sister just never wanted it done and still hasn't at 25 years old.

As for vaxes. I believe it is hep B that is the vax to look at in regards to piercing.

Aside from the issue of body modification of an individual who is unable to consent, piercing places in malls are NOT sterile. They don't use sterile equipment, and the method of piercing used is NOT safe.

Reputable and certified piercers don't work in malls.

My daughter has pierced ears, she got them done at a professional piercing studio, with a piercing needle. The guns used in the typical mall store are not safe and I would not use them.

I have been to professional piercing studios in a mall before. It was a combo tattoo and piercing shop with autoclaves and single use piercing and tattooing needles. Not one of those earring stores with the guns. Although that is the typical mall shop and I agree they are not sanitary or safe.

Pardon me for being ignorant but I have never ever heard of piercing needles?? And I never really ever thouht of ear piercing as bad, guess cause my sister and cousins and I were done young too? Now I would never tatoo my children that is too permanant but I as a teen had like 3 holes in one ear and they have since grew in so i only have one in each ear now. I will rethink this whole situation and talk to the hubby about it before we go forward and do anything about it. Thankyou for your opinions I really do appreciate them

Honestly, I wouldn't do anything permanent like piercing to my child without their consent. I think somewhere in the pre teen years is old enough to make that decision.

But, that's not your question. I wouldn't worry about the not vaxing thing, but I would go to a professional place, not the mall.

I do not tell people about my children's non vax status, not even doctors. There is good reason for this. I know people will cream me, but, in reality, they ask general questions such as "are they up to date?" What does up-to-date mean when every state and every country has a different schedule and different list. By my standards, yes, they are up to date. So unless they ask about specific shots, then there is no reason to say they are not up to date, as that is a vague question.

It was none of the business of some girl working in a ..what was that store? Probably some girl with, hopefully at least a high school diploma but maybe not, it is none of her business about my children's health status, medical treatments they might have had, or otherwise. That woman clearly had her own agenda. There is nothing that ear piercing can cause for which there is a vaccination that would make your child potentially immune to.

The bacteria that causes tetnus lives in the soil. What does this illness have to do with pierced ears?

I completely agree with this. My mother made me have my ears pierced as a child and as an adult, I really feel that it is my body and should have been my choice. I felt that as a child too. I have told my daughter that when and if she wants her ears pierced, fine. But I would never just take her in and do it. I think she needs to be old enough to make that decision on her own. It is, afterall, her body. Piercing is so permanent. To me, and while others might not agree with my opinion, automatically piercing a girl just because she is a girl is along the lines of the places where they do female circumcisions. It is a rite of passage I guess so to speak. But I think rites of passage should not be done, and especially should not be done without the consent of the person it is being done to, and when that person is truly old enough to decide.

There is already an archived thread regarding this here. Personally, I would not feel confident risking even mild infection for pierced ears.
