Okay, I'm fairly certain I know what the right answer is but I guess I need to hear it from other people I trust.
K is 4 months old and has just started rolling from back to front. She often does this in the middle of the night and during her naps. You always hear that sleeping on their tummies is bad. I had the worst nights sleep last night because I worried all night that she would roll over and not be able to breathe. Should I try to keep her on her back or just let her be? She also sometimes naps alone on our bed. Should I roll her over because I'm not there? Part of my worry is that we sidecarred our crib and there is a tiny dip between the beds. Will she fall into the dip and not be able to get her face out? TIA

Mostly I'd let her be. Personally I wasn't comfortable with one that little napping far away from me no matter what (sids rates are much lower when there is an adult in the room)

The transition between the crib and the bed- I can't see- you have to decide if you feel it's safe or not.

If you were in the room with her, I would let her be as well. There have been times when I've been concerned about my DD not being able to breathe on her tummy and have moved her, but she would just roll right on back. If you are close by it should be fine.

My DD#2 was a tummy sleeper from birth (actually, from before birth. She was lying on her tummy in a transverse breech position in utero). I stopped stressing over it, reminding myself that a generation ago all parents were being told that children SHOULD be put to sleep on their tummies (and who knows what parents will be told in another 20 years). Obviously, you have to do what feels/seems right for you, but that's what I did (and our Doc was comfortable with it as well).

ds2 has slept on his tummy since birth. he wouldn't sleep any other way. my ped told me not to worry about it since we were cosleeping. babies only need to be on their backs until they can roll over b/c until then they can't lift their own heads to prevent suffocation. once they're rolling, they're obviously able to move if they're having trouble breathing. the getting trapped between the bed and sidecar is a whole other issue. i have no experience w/them, so won't comment.

Funny thing is that she sleeps worse on her tummy. She used to sleep 8-9 hour stretches but now she wakes every 2-3 crying for me to roll her over. I'm hoping she learns to roll over front to back soon.
Thanks for your responses.
