I came on this forum fully expecting there to be at least one thread on this--the death toll is over 50 thousand from the quake itself (it will be a lot more after the "second wave" of deaths, which is people dying from wounds, gangrene, exposure, disease, lack of clean water and food) and 3 million people are homeless. I believe I remember those stats from an article I read yesterday. Don't have words for the horror of it so I'm not going to even attempt. Spoke to friend who is of Pakistani descent--her husband's cousin's wife and children were all killed. She was collecting clothes, blankets, etc. to send to Pakistan. I'd just given some to help with the Katrina disaster! But we did gather some together and got soem from neighbors. Spoke to friend's husband again yesterday who said that it's pointless sending money as it's so corrupt over there it would nver reach teh right people. Extra sad.

It's unbelievably awful, and even more so how little attention it's getting here. I've been following the increasingly more desperate appeals, and always thinking that it will be the lead story on the evening news, but usually it's something like "a London parrot died of bird flu" or "honeymoon cut short by Cancun evacuation." It's disgraceful.

I gave some money, and the local mosques are all collecting tents, blankets, etc. I do wish we could do something more concrete, but if all we can do is give money, I think that's better than nothing. There was an amazing story on the news last night about adult Pakistani men involved in the scouting movement there, who have been walking up into the mountains with supplies and medical assistance - the aid agencies will only go with helicopters, and don't reach many people, but these men just pack up and go. They were carrying an old woman down in a stretcher, treating the broken arm of a woman whose husband wouldn't let her leave the village for medical assistance, checking on the injuries of a little girl injured when her school collapsed around her. All with very little fanfare. I know the major aid agencies need more helicopters, and so on, but you'd think that in their absence they'd just fan out like these guys and do the best they can.
