Hey Mayretta mamas,
help me out, please! I've been trying to convince my sister and BIL to move here for the longest time. There may be a chance now: BIL is in law enforcement, and Marietta is looking for a chief of police... it's a match made in heaven!

Anyway, I've heard East Cobb schools are great but I don't know specifics bc we're homeschooling. Can you throw me out some names of especially good schools in East Cobb, so my sister can look at houses in those areas?

Thank you!!!!

Most people consider the Walton & Pope clusters to be 'better' than Lassiter, Sprayberry, or Wheeler. As far as elementary & middle schools, I'm more familiar with the ones in my own cluster (Wheeler), but I do know that Sope Creek is considered excellent. The thing about Sope Creek is that it splits - half the kids go on to Wheeler and half to Walton, which is kind of odd, so you have to 'be careful' about which part of Sope Creek you're in.

Someone who knows more about Walton & Pope clusters can probably tell you more about those schools.

I graduated from Walton....many moons ago! I HATED it. Lots of wealthy kids with attitude. Don't know if it is still like that but I would suspect it is as that area has just gotten more expensive. I went to Dickerson Middle and my brother went to Mt BEthel elem. I am just jaded on the whole East Cobb area. Let us not forget their infamous 'gay' thing during the Olympics?!
Just my 2cents.

Yep-we still try not to shop or spend money in Cobb b/c of that "anti-gay" resolution.
: I think it was before the Olympics though, wasn't it? Either way, it's embarassing and disgusting.

Yes, do tell! I don't remember that.

Well, if by a series of fortunate events, my BIL became the chief of police, they'd have to live in Marietta. And I live in Roswell, which is why I want my sister in Eastest Marietta!
So East Cobb is it. Thank you for the school opinions, I welcome any info at all!

Cobb county basically banned homosexuality for their county. nak. they got a bunch of bad press about it as the girls volley ball for the olympics was to take place there. I don't know if they have lifted the resolution since then or not.

that being said, their schools r supposed to be good.

The resolution was passed in 1994; it was lifted either by 1996 or by 1997. Every single commissioner that voted for it has since been voted out of office.

There was an article in the AJC last year about how many gay couples find Marietta & Cobb County in general to be fairly gay-friendly, these days. I suppose I wouldn't really know, but I am fairly confident in saying that Cobb County is NOT the same place it was 12 years ago.

That's good to know. I used to cringe just driving through Cobb b/c of that. I do remember some businesses acutally had to put signs on their doors saying "Gay-Friendly" so people wouldn't think they were part of the resolution.

I also remember many years ago when Oprah did that show on Forsyth County and how it was so racist. I was really young then, but remember being embarassed for the entire state over that one.
Thank goodness Georgia (at least the metro area) has had changes for the better in the last few years as far as tolerance. At least I hope so...

I live in Forsyth county and I just recently saw some snippets of that Oprah show. I was
that someone would be willing to go on national TV and say those types of things. The county is still very much mostly white, but at least some of the racism is going away I think.

My DH grew up in East Cobb but I have never heard anything about the anti-gay stuff there. Interesting, I will have to ask him if he knew about it.
