Easter Traditions? need inspiration

So our family is not religious - I mean, spiritual, but no organized religion. So we do not have a church event or anything to attend for easter. We do live in the capitol city, so we can go to the governor's mansion and get a little easter souvenir (wooden egg last year) which is nice, but eh well, eh.

I grew up on the coast and have wonderful memories of easter egg hunts on the beach, but am now in the desert and the big organized hunt is in the city (we live about a 1/2 hour outside the city in a pretty rural setting) and is HUGE and overwhelming and lame - just a bunch of eggs on a lawn, and some are worth cash so it is kind of overwhelming for ME, I can just imagine what it must seem like to ds who is 3.

So we are probably going to dye eggs and hunt them in our own backyard, and I was going to fix up an easter basket with a nice toy and some little candies, but it all just seems kinda blah, and I was wondering if you ladies have any fun traditions that might give me some inspiration? Thanks in advance

Here's some ideas put forth on The Childhood Years forum: http://www.mothering.com/discussions....php?t=1068081

When I was growing up, we hunted inside the house.

You could also make some spring/Easter decorations for the fridge/walls, doors/windows....

Or find a senior center nearby and plan a visit there--I'm sure they'd get a kick out of seeing new faces.
We celebrate the welcoming of spring. The easter bunny comes to our house and brings spring things like a new sunhat and sunglasses, sunscreen, seeds for the garden and maybe a new outdoor toy like a ball or something. If they don't need those items there might be sandals, gumboots or gardening gloves. We don't have a bunch of money to get unneeded things and the boys have food allergies, so this is how we set up our tradition. I hand dye some eggs with leaves and onion skins and decorate a basket with ivy vines and local flowers if they are up. Usually there is an allowable treat in there... sometimes that is a little bag of hard candy that only the easter bunny and santa bring ( cause it is all natural dye and gluten free they cost 6 bucks for a tiny bag)
oooo, village mama, I LOVE the welcoming spring idea, my son is already so excited for "when it gets warm outside", and we need to get the sunscreen, hat and all that anyway, so why not give it as a gift, GREAT idea! Perfect, I am duly inspired! Him and his dad have been building a sandbox for the last few weeks, so some sandbox toys will be just the ticket too

Fritz, I am on my way to check out that website. Thanks so much!

We have a few traditions here, nothing outstanding but the kids seem to enjoy it. I have about 300 plastic eggs that I get out every year to fill with things (small toys from the dollar store, a small dip into the change jar - usually pennies, with the occasional silver in there, midgie tootsie rolls, etc.). The Easter Bunny hides them all over the yard and we invite a few friends over to go looking for them with the kids. The day before Easter we make spring themed sugar cookies, dye eggs and go to the city egg hunt. On Easter morning they wake up to their baskets that have been left by the bunny. These will usually include a new spring themed video as well.
Same here, I pull out the Easter eggs from the basement and scatter them through out the yard. The kids love it and have so much fun participating

Pretty much same here -
We dye easter eggs the day or two before. The night before we leave out our easter baskets and a carrot for the Easter Bunny.
Then the kids get their easter baskets when they wake up with a few goodies and maybe a book or toy.
We have brunch - we always have swedish pancakes with orange sauce and a sausage ring filled with scrambled eggs.
Then we hunt our dyed and filled plastic eggs either inside or outside if the weather is nice.

That's about it really. Then the kids eat candy all day and fall into a sugar coma

one of my favorite easters was when my mom got like 100 plastic eggs, and put the pieces of a puzzle in the eggs. it was a 500 pc puzzle, and it took us all day to put the thing together as a family (we kept realizing we were missing pieces, and had to go hunting again!)
we were 7 and 9 years old, and i cant wait till my kids are old enough to do it!
We do a welcoming spring/easter thing here as well. We also have mass quantities of candy that are completely useless, but um... what can I say- I have a Cadbury Cream Egg issue. :p

This year my daughter's basket will be hanging from a new bike- that's not the norm for us, but I found one for an absolute STEAL and she needed it...

My son is only 9 months old, and his basket will have a couple little cars, and chocolate his dad likes.
Small things, but celebrations of warmer weather and playing outside again.

At our house, there's not only an easter basket that gets filled with treats, but the big family picnic basket gets filled with good picnic food (fancy rolls, roast beef, lacy cheese, strawberries- yum!) and family game stuff (this year I'm getting pickleball raquets and balls)-- then we all head out to a beautiful spot for a picnic lunch and to play games and have fun together. I can hardly wait!!
