Hello.
I am expecting my first baby any day now. I wonder what EC containers are good to start with. We live in a sort of unusual Japanese apt. The only sinks are the kitchen sink (often has dishes, do food prep there, don`t want to use it for EC) and one next to the bath, which is very unusual for Japan. It is the coldest place in the apt. (water in the pipes must be drained every night in winter, still freeze sometimes) so not a good place for EC. It might be possible sometimes during the day, but I don`t think baby will want to go if it is too cold.
So... what containers work best, esp. for nightime.
Any tips, advice, suggestions appreciated.
TIA,
Kathryn

When my ds was newborn we used a mixing bowl a lot b/c I held it under him while nursing. That is what we used a lot the first month or so, b/c it was too inconvient to get up to go to the bathroom every 10-15 minutes. Later we switched to the sink, then the toilet at 4 months. Then around 6 months he refused to sit on our toilet so we got a baby bijorn potty and also used the tub.

If you use a bowl make sure the rim is rounded well if you baby is heavy.

When ds was first born we used the potty bowl from one of dd's potties. We kept it on the change table & put him on after every change as well as when we thought he had to go. It was really too small so we moved on to a small potty from Ikea similar to the baby bjorn. That was much easier since we could sit him on it & support him rather than having to hold him over it. The front is also raised so he doesn't spray over the top. We often took him to the toilet as well & now try that before the potty.
The problem we are having with that now is holding him far enough back & tipping him forward enough that his pee doesn't go all up the back of the lid
- he can get quite a spray going when he hasn't gone for a while! A few days ago I tried standing him on the front of the seat (since he always wants to stand, anyway) & it worked great - his pee went down
! It doesn't always work (nothing does), but I try it first now before sitting him on the potty, which now resides on the bathroom counter in front of the mirror

Kathryn.....have you had your baby yet??? I just came across this thread.... We have EC'd our baby since she was 8 weeks old (had been mulling it over since birth...but finally made the committment at 8 weeks). I first started peeing her in the sink....but at night...that's quite a trek....from the bedroom, downstairs to the bathroom, then back up to the bedroom....putting her back to sleep....Aaaack....a woman has to sleep SOMETIME! Soo, I started keeping a round Tupperware type bowl under the bed. It helps if it has a wide base, to help avoid tipping over and spilling pee on the carpet. I held the bowl between my knees/thighs and held Esme in a squatting position (under her thighs) over the bowl. She got used to it very quickly and soon...didn't even wake up to pee. When I heard her getting squirmy...I'd take her out (we had long since done away with diapers at night....taking a diaper on and off would wake her up completely).....let her lean back against me, with her hiney directly over the bowl and she'd go......it works for us still and she's 10 months old now.

If the bowl doesn't work for you......you can even just keep a thick towel in your lap and let your baby eliminate into the towel at night. Gotta find what works best for you, though.....everyone has unique circumstances and babies
Best of luck to ya....let us know how its going.....

Lisa
