What makes the Vitamix better from a nutritional standpoint? I have an Osterizer blender that I use for smoothies, juices, soups, etc., but I've heard that the Vitamix doesn't destroy as many nutrients. I would really love one (my blender doesn't really do it for me!), but can't justify the price.

Any info would be great!

Can you throw an apple in your blender....seeds, core and all?!!
A vitamix can do it.

I cut an apple in half, and throw in other fruits and juices..... It makes great smoothies!

I made the creamiest hummus the other day. I did not even have to worry about that outer "shell" of the garbanzo bean in the blender.

Basically, it is just a super powerful blender. I really like mine. I say, if you have the funds, go for it. If you don't, a nice blender is going to do basically the same, but foods might come out a bit chunkier!!!

Check E-bay and the reconditioned Vitamixes -- we got ours reconditioned and it saved us a bundle. My VM is worth every penny and more than we paid, though. I use it a couple of times a day and not only do I make everything the pp mentioned, I make soups, velvety smooth sauces, pudding, ice cream, floofy coffee drinks, smoothies that really merit the name
, and killer frozen margaritas. I also chop veggies and herbs, grind grains, shred cheese. You can use a VM to make nut butters and grind your own meat.

I don't know about the destruction of nutrients, but I do know that we eat better with the Vitamix b/c we use it more than we ever did a blender -- it's easier and makes superior juices/smoothies. I also like to make veggie soups (gazpacho) and juices, which I never would have done with the regular blender. And I can puree all kinds of veggies into sauces, for Stealth Nutrition...murhahhahah!

Anyway, save your pennies, ask for it for birthday/Christmas/Hannukah/Guy Fawkes Day presents, sell blood if necessary. They're worth it.

Thank you, ladies. You are definitely making my decision much easier. Anything to make eating healthy easier is worth it's weight in gold around here. And there are days when a frozen margharita is, too!
