Due to my breastfed 9 month old DS's bowel movements I've decided to do a total elimination diet to see if I can figure things out.

I've been dairy free for almost 6 months now (he gets really stinky gas if I eat dairy), and that has helped, but not eliminated his symptoms.

He doesn't ever seem to have gastrointestinal pain, and his skin is for the most part just fine (he gets red chapped cheeks and chin, but that seems to be totally related to teething pain).
His bowel movements have never been normal (yellow, seedy BF poo), they are usually quite mucousy, sometimes clay like, and the past couple of months are usually dark green.
They have also been smelling bad again, but I haven't been consuming dairy.

He is on Diflucan for very persistent thrush.

Anyway, I need to stay with an anti-candida diet, but I really want to do a total elimination diet too.

I HAVE to figure out what's causing this!

The first Dr (nurse pract.) told me that it wasn't a problem, he just has an immature system (whatever), and the second one (I like her better) thinks that perhaps it's the yeast, and once we get that taken care of it will be all better.

Anyway, I haven't been feeding him much in the way of table foods, a few little nibbles here and there, but he's 99% breastfed at this time.

I found Dr. Sears elimination diet:

Quote:
Eat only range-fed turkey and lamb, baked or boiled potatoes and sweet potatoes (with salt and pepper only), rice and millet as your only grain, cooked green and yellow squash for your vegetable, and for fruit, pears and diluted pear juice. Drink a rice-based beverage drink in place of milk on cereal or in cooking.
But, with a candida diet I'm not really supposed to have potatoes or rice.

So, what to do?

Thanks for reading this, fussy babe (he's had roseola on top of everything else this week, poor thing!).

ANY input would be appreciated, believe me!

DS has a dairy allergy so when we both got thrush, I went on a yeast free diet for 2 weeks and honestly, it sucked since our diet is already so limited. I remember eating matzo crackers, peanuts, sunflower seeds and turkey. Good luck! You can do it!

What exactly is that?

We're on a yeast free diet which I would call an elimination diet so I"m not sure what you mean?

I think she wants a diet free of all allergens as well as following the candida diet.

I think you'd be ok with Dr. Sears diets, minus the white potatoes. I wonder if sweet potatoes would be alright?

Yes, Nicole had it right. Sorry if I was unclear

I'm thinking that DS has food allergy/sensitivity issues beyond the known dairy and candida issues, and I'm trying to figure that out. Oy, it's making me
:

And from what I've read sweet potatoes are out too, as well as rice very frequently.

Hmmmmm we have sweet pots and rice on our yeast-free diet. NO regular pots, though.

My fear is that when we eliminate a food or food group, that we replace its value; ie. how do we get carbs/fiber now?

Ah, it's all confusing to me so I might be making no sense.

Ok, well...if I can do rice and sweet potatoes then I might be able to do it.
I mean, it'll only be for a week. Two at most, then I can start adding in new foods.

*Sigh* He's had thrush off and on since he was like 2 months old, so he probably has leaky gut issues that need to be addressed/repaired.
So, do I try the Specific Carb Diet, or the Body Ecology one?? Or something else entirely?

He has some rashy patches on his legs that cropped up yesterday, presumably from munching on an Arby's curly fry

Our diet is pretty dang severe. But, yeah, sweet potatoes are in. And, let me tell you...they're tasty baked AND as french fries.
She said long grain rice is pref to short grain, fyi.

And, of course, make sure all your meats are hormone/antibiotic, etc free.

And, all veggies fresh or lightly steamed. Avoid veggies that have had cold storage.

Wow. I don't think there is much left to eat then.

I was going to suggest the Enjoy Life brand that makes cookies, bars etc minus the most common allergens (milk, eggs, soy, peanut, wheat) but then they probably contain yeast.

I will tell you that antibiotics give my son runny stools and thrush gave him gas. Hang in there! I know it's hard trying to figure out what to do and what foods to avoid. Good luck and let me know if you need to vent!!

Hm, the only problem is that I don't see any source of fat!
I really don't want to be giving him skim breastmilk! Not to mention that I don't feel the need to be losing a bunch of weight at the moment.

Maybe just keep coconut oil/milk in?

I'm concerned about this as well. I actually intend on going on a TED as well as an anti candida diet but I'm waiting until some testing is done with ds to make sure I don't screw those up first.

Autumnmama,

Are you also casein free? Or just major dairy? Are you eliminating everything or just the top 8 allergens?

Yes, casein free too. DS can't even handle me eating raw goat's milk cheese

I'm planning on eliminating pretty much everything

In my OP I quoted the Dr. Sears elimination diet plan:

I don't think I can handle eating lamb (not that I could find any organic/free range around here anyway), and regular potatoes are out, so it looks like free-range turkey, long grain brown rice, sweet potatoes, yellow and green squash, an occasional pear, and millet for the next week or two.

I'm going to have to go shopping...I wonder if our HFS sells whole frozen turkeys, I'll probably be eating a lot

Oh man, no mayo/veganaise...no turkey salad sandwiches. Oh wait, no bread anyway, dang!

Well, do you want to be my Elimination Diet buddy?
This is the diet I planned on doing as well. I agree with you on the lamb, I'm not sure I would eat that... My other problem is I really have no idea where to find free range turkey around here! All we have for options are Walmart and a local grocery store. Both of which only carry butterball or something similar.

I feel like if I start out with a TED right away it's less guesswork and then in a couple weeks when I start adding in foods slowly I should know what's making a difference and what's not.

I'm pretty sure ds is intolerant for sure to dairy but I'm wondering if he's possibly sensitive to other foods as well.

My biggest problem is that I don't know how to get enough calcium and other nutrients I need. I don't want my milk supply to diminish. I can't see eating turkey every morning for breakfast either!
:

I did see another ED where you could eat most fruits and veggies, except a few, and I might allow those. Although that probably doesn't fit with the anti candida diet either. Ds has had recurrent thrush for 8 months of his life and while I don't see it right now I'm not convinced it's gone either!

Are you taking any Enzymes? Probiotics?

I don't take my probiotics religiously but I should...
:

I'm looking into different types of Enzymes but right now I see that the only enzyme that qualifies as ok for the GFCF diet is Peptizyde.

Well, I'm not great about taking things, but I do have probiotics (New Chapter - All Flora), and also Now brand Papaya enzymes.

I'd like to look into enzymes a bit more, I know that they can help with candida.

Oh, another thing I've been trying to do is drink Kombucha. DS loves it too..he makes a face when drinking it, but then he wants more and more

I actually have my own Kombucha "mushroom", I just need to take care of it and then I can have home made Kombucha whenever I want!

Wow, how do you make Kombucha?? I never knew you could do that!
