DH and I are looking at getting a dog in the near future; I did some research, and decided that a golden retriever is the best breed for us.

Further web searches came up with the Golden Retriever club (www.grc.de), which had a list of puppies, when they were born, and when they'd be available, along with contact info for the breeders.

I looked at the websites of the 3 breeders closest to where we live, and picked the one where I'd like to get the puppy. Now I want to email that particular breeder, and confirm that there really are puppies available, etc.

This is my email thus far:

Hello; my name is Jamie Lastname. I saw from www.grc.de that you might have puppies available in the near future. My husband and I are looking for a Golden Retriever as a family pet. I looked at your website, and your dogs are absolutely beautiful.

We are Americans, and I am using an online translator to translate this email from English to German, so I apologize for any errors.

Please let me know if we might be able to meet with you about possibly purchasing one of your puppies. If none are available, please disregard this email.

Does this sound alright? (Beyond being very awkward and stilted, I'm very shy, esp. when there's a language barrier.) Is there any other info I should include?

That sounds good, but if this is a reputable Breeder, he/she may want to know about your family situation, your home, your yard, your experience with dogs, how much exercise you can give the dog, how you intend to train him or her... basically an inquisition. You may be able to omit this information now, but expect these questions in the future.

You live in outside the U.S.? Is that why there is a language barrier?

Oh - and I would include my English version, stating that there is a translation following your letter. They may understand English. Just paste the translation below your English version.

Thanks; yes, we live in Germany.

I'm hoping they do speak English, or at least know someone who does; we only know our landlords who speak German, and while I think they *would* act as translators, I'd rather they not have to, kwim?
