Does anyone know what supplements or herbs are good for the kidney or helpful to ease side effects of dialysis?
I would rally appreciate any answers. It looks like this is where my husband is heading, soon.
Evidently carnitine is sometimes used in dialysis patients. You should have his carnitine levels checked though before supplementing. And they can RX a prescription...which would be safer.
Lots of fluids, lots of love, lots of good warm food.
I'm so sorry. Are their plans for a transplant? My mom has had two transplants (awaiting a third, but each one lasted over 10 years) and my little brother had one, and ds has a kidney disease that will result in end stage renal failure in his teen years (I'm in denial, but we'll deal with that when it comes!). If you need in support about kidney transplants, pm me. There is a mama or two around here whose children have had transplants, too.
My bro and mom aren't into any herbs or supplements, so I'm not sure. Is he on restricted liquids or a restricted diet? I know that my mom is on a crazy low-iodine diet right now. She has to avoid things like whole wheat products, protien, chocolate, cola, salt (and most healthy things). I think that is a pretty common kidney disease diet.
When my grandfather was on dialysis, they kept a close eye on his potassium levels, but I don't know much about special diets because he had a j-tube at that point (unrelated to the kidney failure).
mama. Try visualizations from "Love Your Body" by Louise L. Hay. I know in Chinese medicine, there are points and foods to strengthen the kidneys, but I don't have the info here. Best wishes.
Popping in from July 07--I am so sorry to hear of your husband's illness. I unfortunately don't have any advice, but I wanted to give some words of support.
Thank you all. I am going to be with him for the weekend, in the hospital. The kids will be by friends.
Ruth- his name is Avraham Tzvi ben Sheindel Liba
BB, maybe you can give "Aliza the herb lady" (Aliza Edry Levine) a call. She has been amazingly helpful to my women friends. Her clinic is in Ramot and her # is 02- 571-4978. Also, Pam Swickley in Beit Shemesh is a Chinese herbalist and may have good advice.
I wish you strength in dealing with the Israeli medical system.

LookMommy!- Two names come to mind, have you heard of Dr. Rosenthal? He lives in Israel yet comes to America for visits to see patients. I can't remember the second name now. I think they're both iridologists.
