Willow is 5 weeks old today, and this morning I woke up with one of my breasts extremely engorged. I have nursed her on it most of the morning and it isn't really doing much to help. What can I do, it is incredibly painful.

You can put cabbage leaves on it for comfort. Also I used frozen bags of peas to stop them from swelling and I got in the shower and just massaged my breast and expressed a little until it was bearable. You don't want to over pump or anything because you will overstimulate your supply and be more engorged tommorrow. Try massaging with small circular motions around the edge of the breast and work your way in to free up the ducts while nursing.

Thanks. I just got out of the shower and it feels a little better, but now I am kind of thinking it may be a clogged milk duct or the beginnings of mastitis, because it is really swollen on the underside of my breast, and I am starting to really feel like crap, and getting lots of flu like symptoms. I think I am gonna go do a search for treatment and call the doc. Next question, what doc do I call, a gp? the ob? does it matter?

nurse as much as possible on the affected side. you could also pump though baby is more effective. you don't need to worry about overstimulation you just need to get that milk flowing freely. here's a great link with tons of info -- http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/mastitis.html . nurse, nurse nurse! try nursing on all fours with baby lying on her back if she can do that.
