GREAT idea, Meg!!!
Now... uh, we need to konw yours!!!

1. when you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
An actress or a lawyer... same thing, right?

2. did you ever become what you wanted to be when you grew up?(if not, what sort of career or activities did/do you do?)
I did summer stock theater for a while, but the long hours and little pay put me off to going to New York or LA to act. I did some commercials, I competed in interpretation events in college and won 3rd and 4th place in the nation doing so (out of 200 schools and thousands of entries). I went into Arts Management for my BA. Then, went back for a MS in Instructional Technology/Communications. Did the techinical thing for a while, but with kids I wanted to "sequence." Now I teach at a local college in Communications (public speaking, interpersonal, oral interpretation, etc). I teach part time. I also own www.heartfelted.com but that's on hold until I feel better. And, I'm LLL leader, but with a 3rd babe and not feeling well I haven't been doing anything LLL for a while. I'm not sure I'll go back as a leader when I return.
3. what are your nicknames?
My parents chose Claire because it didn't have any obvious nicknames. That said, I've been called Chocolate E. (as in E'clair) off and on.
4. what's the last book you read? (and when?)
The last book I read was Berfgdorf Blondes, last week. It was total escapist fun! Ooh, like E!, but literary! :LOL
5. what's the best book you've read in recent memory?
The Red Tent. If you haven't read it... you must. It's required if you post at Mothering!!!
6. favorite magazines?

2. Bitch (about feminism not about dogs!!!)
3. Mothering
7. where do you live and do you like it there?

8. if you could live anywhere, where would that be and why?
Mendocino CA, I just adore northing California and the coastline, the cool weather the beauty and the laid back atmosphere.
9. what do you love to do when you're by yourself? (keep it clean ladies
)
I love to go out of my house -- hiking or swimming followed by a coffee shop with a good book & cup o' joe. (although, I'm off coffee with HG, one day I'll drink hot coffee again though!)

Seriously though, both my mom and I have special non-human powers, we don't stink. If I have some nervous event or hot event coming up, I'll use Toms of Maine, but even then I don't think I need it. I just don't smell. (BTW, this isn't just me talking, this has been confirmed by MANY people... not just those trying to be nice!) I sometimes think that maybe in earlier times my mother and I would be considered some kind of deity for not smelling... but that's just in my day dreams!!! :LOL
20. sum yourself up in three sentences or less....
Too lazy to come with 3 sentences. Too tired to come up with three sentences. Too braindead to come up with three sentences.

: Love reading these...keep 'em coming!

1. when you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Many things...most notably an orphan but alas it was not to be (you can thank movies like Annie and Natty Gan). Astronaut made the top of this list for many years in the 80s - I even went to Space Camp in Huntsville Alabama when I was 11...then I found out I was claustrophobic!! Next was an anthropologist which I did get my first degree in but then (or should I say through anthro) I found my real passion...

2. did you ever become what you wanted to be when you grew up?
(if not, what sort of career or activities did/do you do?)

In a way I did...it was just that I didn't have a name for what I really wanted to do. As a child I was always flipping through my mum's maternity textbooks and sticking a pillow under my shirt. I discovered the existence of midwifery through anthropology and have never looked back...

ok, ok, i didn't have time to post the Qs AND my answers

1. when you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
a private detective! thought i was harriet the spy... my friends called me MEGNUM P.I.
2. did you ever become what you wanted to be when you grew up?
(if not, what sort of career or activities did/do you do?)
i became a journalist -- some detective work in that actually -- and now love creative non-fiction. i publish my own zine called Screamachine: The Mamacoaster Zine.
3. what are your nicknames?
meggers, the meggins, megalou, meginheimer, meganator, megameg, may, madge, marge, maggie, maggiemou, megsickins (like mexicans), margaret mary frances (yah, i'm catholic), megalini --
okay, aren't you sorry i asked this one? the weirdest thing i've been told about my name is that it sounds like POW! WAM! or one of those super hero comic book beat-up sounds!!! bizarro.

4. what's the last book you read? (and when?)
reading "a walk across egypt" now. just finished "good grief." a novel about a young widow. liked it!
5. what's the best book you've read in recent memory?
easy! "bel canto" (also loved the red tent though!!!)
6. favorite magazines?
LOVE Brain, Child. Devour Newsweek, it's the only news I get. Mothering is good, but I think it's been better... 'nother story for another post.
7. where do you live and do you like it there?
we live in a 'burb of atlanta. like it b/c family is VERY close. do not like it because it's deforested and conservative and thoroughly without culture.
8. if you could live anywhere, where would that be and why?
ahh, easy! in the mountains. probably ashville, NC or bolder, CO.
9. what do you love to do when you're by yourself? (keep it clean ladies )
some of you hit on mine! drink coffee, listen to NPR, read, waste time, go for walks, run an errand unencumbered!
10. beverage of choice?
water has always been it -- i'm such a cheap date, but for decadence -- iced coffee or some hefty, dark beer, mmm~
11. what do you waste money on?
food (but really is that a waste? it's so good! and if pricey, probably pretty good for you), yard toys (anything to get the boys out more), dumb crappy things on sale that i certainly don't need.
12. what would your friends say they love best about you?
dorky sense of humor, likely to make myself the butt of the joke...
13. sport of choice? do you play or just watch?
not so jocky, but i LOVE to swim and now that my 5yearold has declared soccer to be his life's goal -- see, dorky sense of humor there -- i supposed i'm a soccer mom! i do enjoy watching soccer way more than baseball. live in fear of the day he begs to play that~
14. messy house or clean house?
once there was a day that you could see my floor... when my son was THREE (and very verbal mind you) he saw me get out the mop to clean a box of baking soda that fell off the shelf and he pointed to the mop and said "Mom, what's that???" he was totally serious! When he was four, he asked me what linoleum was. i told him it was the stuff on our kitchen floor. he said: " oh, a kind of a dirt then???" so... i guess at least no one will ever accuse me of ignoring my children for housework!
15. what do you waste time on? (besides surveys like this!)
the web for sure. also, i page thru food and restaurant coupons over and over trying to pick what i might use, but never do. we can never afford to go out!
16. who is your hero, living or dead?
my uncle jerry -- the biggest heart that ever lived, the most positive guy you've ever met. as for someone famous, my hero was always helen keller (talk about overcoming adversity!) and now i'm in awe of all first time novelists who get their book sold. (i'm sorry, but JK Rowling is a total mama goddess! she deserves to be richer than the Queen!)
17. if you could get rid of one invention...used to say guns and panty hose, but these days, i wish it were the computer sometimes. love this stuff, but wish it had a timer so hubby and i wouldn't use ALL our free time on it!
18. are you a night owl or a early riser? (or neither?)2 am was my usual bedtime until i was felled by the mighty mooch. now i can barely keep my eyes open at 10!
19. what brand of deoderant do you wear?
ha, ha, spark yer hilarious! i DO stink, but don't usually wear anything. if i'm going sleeveless or going to be doing a lot of hugging, i borrow my husband's mitchum.
20. sum yourself up in three sentences or less....
i'm a 36 year old married for 12 crazy years to my best friend. i'm the mom of two boys, living a dream life just outside atlanta, but always longing for more. more time in the day to write, more sunshine to send the kids out into, more money to travel and play, more peace on earth.... me and k.d. lang -- a constant craving! thanks for answering everyone!

1. when you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
well of course i wanted to be an actress...and i also had the astronaut bug after seeing Space Camp
...then I moved on to doctor / psychologist...but all the while i honestly knew that what i really wanted was to be a wife and mom - not a popular thing for a girl to announce btw...i was the valedictorian of my high school and everyone thought i would be a huge success - which i think i am but you know...

2. did you ever become what you wanted to be when you grew up?
(if not, what sort of career or activities did/do you do?)
I have a BS in Psychology and Sociology and spent about 6 months working as a case worker for adult schizophrenics which was terribly scary when I was 21 and just out of college so I went back to get a Masters but had to make due with the local college (major family stuff I couldn't walk away from...story of my life) which only offered an MBA program - which I never wanted but I went ahead and got it since it was available. During that time I worked at the college in student life then when I finished I started working as a fund raiser for non-profits and found out I was really good at it and really liked it - so I was doing that up until my water broke with Jake (literally - I was at a fund raising party at the time
). and yes - i eventually became what i really wanted to be
But I stay involved with the stuff I did before babies by serving on a couple non profit boards and helping with fund raising etc.

How interesting that so many of you gals actually did something along the lines of what you wanted to be when you grew up!

1. when you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A forest ranger or marine biologist. I told my parents that I would hate having an "office job."

2. did you ever become what you wanted to be when you grew up?
Nope. I had several jobs in offices and hated them all, although I met many nice people who were my coworkers. Nowadays my childhood careers don't quite fit me but my love of the outdoors is the same. I dream of the day when I can buy acreage and live off the land like a pioneer! It would be a place where children in the fostercare system or other local kids in need of love and support could come for friendships, mentoring, and fun with animals in the great outdoors. Like this: Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch - the ranch of rescued dreams

3. what are your nicknames?
Don't really have any.

4. what's the last book you read? (and when?)
The Mystic Rose by Stephen Lawhead, last week. It's set in medieval times; a strong-willed woman from Scotland goes on a journey to the Holy Land. A real page-turner.

5. what's the best book you've read in recent memory?
Wild at Heart by John Eldredge. Absolute best book I've ever read next to the Bible itself. Really powerful and life-changing.

6. favorite magazines?
None.

7. where do you live and do you like it there?
In northwestern Washington State. It's beautiful here. We live 2 minutes from the ocean (Puget Sound/San Juans) and an hour from great skiing (Mt. Baker). Perfect!

8. if you could live anywhere, where would that be and why?
Either here or in Hungary (where my family is from) but on acreage.

9. what do you love to do when you're by yourself?
Read or garden.

Cold-brewed (toddy) coffee!

That I'm straightforward and candid.
