can anyone point me to a thread about the envelope system? i'm useless without the search function.

if there isn't a thread, then lay it on me! how do you do it? what do you have envelopes for? do you add the money weekly/monthly? any advice?

we've tried budgeting a million different ways and we are just.not disciplined enough. dh is uncomfortable with having cash around but we are both desperate enough at this point we want to try it even if only temporarily to get us back on track and reign in the spending.

also, are there other specific debt plans similar to dave ramsey? i like a lot of what he says, but i don't think it's quite for us. i do like the idea of having set goals and sharing the progress with a group though.

thanks so much, this board is awesome!

My husband was really worried about having the cash around as well, but when we thought logically about it, we decided that if we had the money put somewhere weird, in a basket in a closet, that it probably wouldn't be noticed and that thieves would most likely take all the electronics first!

We also thought, hey we have homeowners insurance and the houses next to us are only about 8 feet apart...we are packed in like sardines...so I don't think anyone would really be able to rob us with out it being really obvious!

So for envelopes, anything that doesn't have to be mailed or paid online for bills, goes into a seperate envelope...food, fun, car cair, gas, etc.

It really does work for us...my husband was always upset that he never could spend any money and now he has his own, and I make him use it if he wants beer or wine...suddenly he realizes what an expense that is and why I don't consider it under grocery!

I use an envelope for groceries and another one for entertainment/eating out. Our bills are paid online so no envelope for that although a lot of people use an envelope for rent, groceries, utilities etc. We put our money in twice a month on each pay day, when its gone, its gone. Really helps us visualize what we have left.
