Estimating Your Due Date - Various Ways?

779 Views 11 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  BensMom
I haven't gone to my Dr yet (I just got my referral and will be going within the next week or so) but I have arriaved my EDD based on my last period. Or at least what I think was a period (it only lasted a few dyas.) Thing is, the top of my uterus can be felt about an inch and a half below my belly button. Is this a bit high or no for 16 weeks 2 days?

For you out there who are like me and put off going ot Dr's/midwives until you have to, how did you arrive at your due date?

what is the measurement from the top of your uterus to the top of your pubic bone?
when you say period but it was short how short, compared to normal and what was the length of time between that period and the one before that?
if you have a stethoscope can you hear the baby? listen often and mark the day you can hear the heartbeat. most common time to first hear with a fetoscope or stethoscope is 20 weeks-- occasionally can be heard sooner
are you feeling movement? mark the day you first start feeling movement. this is usually around 16 weeks
do you have morning sickness? if so when did it start and also mark down when it stopped
Hey, thanks for the reply!

My morning sickness went away approx 2 months ago. My last period was 4 days vs the usual 6. It was also light. I have felt fetal movements for about a month now. Two weeks ago the baby moved so hard I felt it roll under my hand while laying down (like Aliens.) My husband even felt the baby move under his hand last night. Not heavy, light movement, but he could feel it. My nipples also started darkening several months ago and other odd changes to my boobs that I dont' recall with my first pregnancy. Like the nipple itself (not areola) is twice as large as before I got pregnant.

As far as measuring from the top of my pelvic bone - I am not sure. My uterus goes down in sorta deep, and is my uterus is also tilted twords my back (always has been - I have had my doctor in years past manually reposition my uterus forward, but it never stays put) so it's hard to feel around in there.

I would also guess I have gained a total of 10-12 pounds. I was never a scale watcher prior to prgnancy, but over the last several weeks I have started to visibly gain weight.

An easy way to figure your due date:
Take the first day of your last period (mine was 11/9)
Subtract 3 months (so I get 8/9)
Add a week (so I get 8/16)

That's pretty much what those little wheels in the OBs/midwife's offices do.

I wouldn't put too much stock in the fundal height....at least for me, I measure fine at first but then measure big for awhile. all the care providers I've seen have admitted that unless the measurements are really off for a long time, they're not all that useful.

If you are really unsure of the date of your last period, they may want you to get a u/s to estimate it.

HTH!

Yes, measuring from my menstral cycle is how I arrived at my date. But the period was light and wierd and only lasted for a few days.

With my daughter the date of my last cycle was way off, they ended up arriving at the date by measuring the length of her bones through the ultrasound...

I would rather have an estimated due date that is a couple of weeks "late" than early, so that your OB is not pushing for induction before the baby is ready. Does that make sense? So, I'd keep my LMP due date and then privately keep track of the other signs and give myself a heads up that way.

Good luck to you!

I have had preeclampsia in the past, and I have all the symptoms of having it again (going to the Dr. for confirmation) so late due date in my case wouldn't be very wise.
Ummm, wow. If you have preeclampsia symptoms perhaps you should go to an urgent care clinic, right away, and not wait for your OB appt. Especially since you are maybe only 20 weeks along, at the most.

And, a late due date wouldn't matter, if you were in bad shape--they'd take the baby whether he or she was early or not. It's too dangerous to leave them in, for both of you.

Good luck to you!

Um, yeah, I agree. Pre-e isn't something to mess around with. I would be going in today.

if you are having signs and symptoms of pre-e this is very early-- my guess would have been maybe 18+ weeks instead of 16 + if the bleeding was implantation bleeding. were you still breast-feeding when you got pregnant? were you having cycles and how far apart are they- 28 days 36 days-?? did you notice any fertile mucous around the time you might have conceived? by my wheel if you are 16 weeks and 3 days then possible implantation based on 28 day cycle would have been March 6th , ovulation on Feb 28 +/- 3 days and first day of the last period Feb 13. now if you have longer or shorter cycles the days could be different

The clinic is only good for a doctor referral - also they do not do labs there. The only other alternative is the ER, but I would feel dumb going to the ER... at this time my blood pressure isn't high enough for me to make that choice, and the fetus is moving around. On a positive note, my headaches have subsided and my facial swelling isn't as bad. I have been taking it easy and not doing as much. I do have to take my husband to his dental appointment, his wisdom tooth is getting extracted and I have to drive him home. On the way home I will check my blood pressure. If it's too high I will stop by the ER.

My cycles are all over the map. Sometimes I get my period in 2 weeks, sometimes 6 weeks, so it is very hard to judge my periods. Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it!

That's about where my uterus measured when I was 16w (the MW apprentice said I was measuring around 18w, but it was normal for 2nd time moms to measure ahead).
