Ethan Asher was born this morning at 11:46 a.m. after an amazingly quick labor. He's 8 lbs 4 oz and 21.75" long. He's great at nursing (thank goodness! His big brother was not.), and we're going to take a nap now.

Story to come eventually....

Here's the story - not the final draft, but I wanted to get it posted.

As with DS, I realized I was in labor in the early morning. I woke up hungry and needing the bathroom around 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, and noticed what I thought were gas pains. I emptied myself and went back to bed, but the “gas pains” came back. I noticed they were rhythmic and decided they must be contractions, although they felt nothing like the contractions I had with DS. These were all down low in my pelvic floor, between my legs, and with DS I had back pain – very much like menstrual cramps. I went back to sleep, but I woke up with each contraction. DH got up about 7:30 and I let him know that I was contracting. I snuggled with DS for a while and got up about 8 and went to contractionmaster.com to see if there was a pattern. The contractions were about 5-7 minutes apart, and not lasting for very long or feeling very intense. I folded some laundry, went to the bathroom and had bloody show, maybe around 9, and then had a big breakfast of pancakes and a scramble. During breakfast, things picked up enough that I needed to stand up and walk for the contractions, but nothing unmanageable. I finished eating, and got in the shower about 10:45, after calling the birth team to let them know the baby was coming that day.
While I was showering, things got a bit more intense, but I still though that I had several hours to go. I got out of the shower at 11:15, feeling a bit funny and decided I must need to lie down. I got into bed and transition hit at about 11:20. It wasn’t as dramatic as with my first labor, but I did start crying and shaking a bit. The contractions became very intense and I really started vocalizing. It scared DS, but DH got him calmed down, and then he was fine. As I laid there on my side, I had the urge to move my top leg up, and I realized that my body had begun to push. I really panicked then, DH had just called everyone to tell them to come NOW, and I couldn’t believe that no one was here and things were so intense.
My midwife was the first to arrive, at maybe 11:30 and her assistant, another midwife, arrived a few minutes later. I wanted to get downstairs to the birth tub, but just couldn’t move and the contractions seemed too close to move in between them. She helped me downstairs, and I climbed into the tub. It felt heavenly, but I only had a moment to relax before the contractions were back. I felt a pop and looked down – my water had broken and I could see the force of it making ripples under the water. Another contraction and I reached down and felt something I couldn’t believe. The baby’s head was right there! My body was pushing, but I was resisting – I could not accept that the baby was coming so quickly. I was telling the baby to slow down and wait for me, and also saying that I wasn’t having any more children and asking why I agreed to do this again. I pushed once because my body commanded it and his head popped out. One more push and his body slid out and I pulled him up to me at 11:46 a.m. I held him and stared at his full head of black hair - it was all so fast that I was just in shock. I checked out this new little baby for a few minutes and then felt another contraction coming. I gave a push and expelled the placenta. I got out of the tub and straight into the shower. I got out and they checked me - I had a few skidmarks and one little tear that didn’t require stitches. I was really worried that I would tear a lot because of the speed of his exit. He came at 40w5d, and was 8.25 lbs, 21.75”, with a 13.75” head – ever so slightly smaller than DS1 who arrived at 38w3d.
My labor with DS1 had been twice as long and I pushed for 45 minutes. This was truly easy compared to that, at least as easy as birth can be. I had just had a pelvic adjustment the previous day, and I know that allowed my body to be efficient instead of wasting energy pushing through an imperfect outlet.
