EU Moves to Ban Cat and Dog Fur

OK... I just assumed that this was already banned. At least I hoped so. Anybody know if dog/cat fur is allowed in the States?

Warning: The link below has some DISTURBING descriptions on how the animals are killed.

"The European Parliament is set to back a ban on cat and dog fur imports, in a move to reduce the two million cats and dogs slaughtered in China each year.

MEPs say shoppers buy goods made with the fur unknowingly, because exporters attach false labels.

It is used in coats, linings for boots and gloves, stuffed toys, and even homeopathic aids for arthritis. "

But the way animals are treated in China is beyond worst nightmares. Not saying that animals are treated great in western world but China goes beyond everything. It is disgusting.

Besides no one needs fur. And I say this as someone who lives in cold climate. Over 90% of furs produced in the world goes to decoration(hoods etc.). Fur industry uses huge amounts of water, it is a big polluter and so on.

For what? for fashion. for vanity.

I truly hate fur industry on it's all forms.

I say fur is fur. Banning one kind of animal fur makes no sense.

It would make sense to ban fur or other products that are made using certain methods.
Fur is fur in my book too. Fur can be used to keep people warm, and many people use it for that purpose- be it a coat or other.

I agree with SP- if you're going to ban one, ban all otherwise fur is just that- fur.
So the treatment of animals is a non issue? Animal protection laws in western world should go down the toilet?

Like I said over 90% of furs go to decorating clothes. Rest are fashion coats - not to keep people warm. There are materials that are much better/more practical than fur.

I agree that furs - all furs are totally unneccessary and fur industry should be stopped.
But as long as there are people with too much money and that are filled with vanity, there will be furs. There is too much money on it so animal rights or environmental issues do not matter.

But in this case with China where animals are skinned alive and other unspeakable things are done, the goal is to stop the torture. And yes I agree - all fur industry is torture but China seems to be extra creative in torture business.

Not sure where you go that. As I said, I support rules about animal treatment. Because those make sense. I don't support a "this animal is OK to wear, but that one isn't" judgement--that just ranks animals in order of importance and completely arbitrary.

If your goal is to keep fur products where the animals are raised using particularly horrible treatment, then make standards about treatment. Otherwise not only is it nonsensical and backwards, but it's also innefective because the law doesn't apply to other animals that start being treated horribly.
