So I have been looking for Rapadura to buy locally and a friend informed me that costco sells Rapadura only it's not the brand name "Rapadura" it's Just says Evaporated Cane Juice-Organic Sugar from Wholesome Sweeteners. Turns out I bought this a couple months ago and I have been baking with it ever since, I just figured this was Organic Sugar and less processed then typical refined sugar. Is this really comparable to Rapadura? I am really confused please help me out here! I know Evaporated Can Juice is technically what Rapadura is but I didn't think this was it.

Here is a link to what the product looks like

No, that's not the same thing. Evaporated cane juice has most of the molasses removed. It's better than white sugar, because it is less refined, but it is not the same as Rapadura.

Rapadura or Sucanat still has the molasses, and should be a dark brown color. It's different from brown sugar in that brown sugar has the molasses removed and then added back in. It has small crystalline granules, almost the size of rock salt, is dry and dark brown.

Thats what I thought but I wanted to be sure, being since I have never bought Rapadura so I didn't know what it was like. Thanks Cristeen!

Rapadura or sucanat looks like brown, irregularly-shaped granules rather than crystals. Not at all crystal-like.

I found sucanat at my local Sharp Shopper! Score!

i figured i would jump in here, since most TFers are relatively food politicos, too....we LOVE rapadura in our house...though, through working at a health food market with a conscious, we found out that the rapunzel brand is not only owned by a large corporation, but it's a large corporation that practices child labor.
yikes.
i don't know if there are any other brands of rapadura out there (would love a suggestion if that's the case!) but we've been using either a nice local maple sugar or the organic fair trade sugar from wholesome sweeteners....doesn't taste as 'full' as the rapadura, but it sits better on the brain.
best in the meantime

Well thaks for your input! I would hate to support a company that supports child labor, because I don't agree with that myself. So thanks for the tip

I have been using the Organic Sugar form WS as well, and even though it's still sugar I feel better about using it. I did try Sucanat once which is supposedly like rapadura but I didn't care for it too much. Is the wholesome sweeteners brand Sucanat better? And is a lot like Rapadura in taste and texture, etc...?
