While I was TTC, I confided in a number of friends and sympathetic co-workers. However, now that I am actually pregnant, I don't want to mention it until at least my first appointment. However, I figure it's only a matter of time before I'm faced with the "any luck?" question.<br><br>
So... does anyone have any prepared responses? I suppose I could outright lie, but I'd love to have an answer that deflects further inquiry without actually saying anything.

We're still not telling, broadly speaking, but I have decided to just 'fess up if anyone asks (and did this morning when one of my workfriends did). Then again, we also didn't tell that many people that we were trying.<br><br>
Sorry I don't have any good advice for you!

I would just say, "When there's news to share, I'll definitely let you know!"

That is always a good one to have up your sleeve! I usually just say that I don't know yet.<br><br>
I did outright lie to a friend just last week. I am usually itching to share with everyone but I just don't trust this person not to tell other mutual friends... and even if they act surprised, I want it to be MY news to share lol. But I figure if they ask outright (I was taught that was rude, btw, so I don't do it) then they deserve to be lied to <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/redface.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="Embarrassment">

I like the "when there's news to share..." I'll keep that one in my repertoire. The other day a friend said (in a place where others were in earshot) "Can I ask about the status of your womb?" and I answered, "I hope it's a hospitable place for a baby."<br><br>
Then (of course) one of the people listening said, "Now, that could mean, you hope it's hospitable for the baby growing inside you..." Ugh, so annoying. I was like, look all I said was I hope my womb is hospitable for a baby.<br><br>
I also dislike outright lying, though I've done it too. For some reason it feels like a betrayal to my fetus...but I definitely think people who are nosy deserve to be told to mind their own business. Why don't some people have any manners?

You could use the ambiguous "We're hopeful." You don't have to specify that you're hopeful for a smooth pregnancy. They'll probably assume it means you're not, but it might make them wonder a little without actually knowing.

I like both of these... thanks!

Once, a guy friend poked my belly and asked if I was expecting. I said calmly, "No, that's just my FAT." He was mortified. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol"><br><br>
(I wasn't pregnant at the time, but had been trying for a while and it was a sore subject. Not to mention the fact that my belly always sticks out a little and people are always thinking I'm pregnant. Nosy nellies!)

LOL! Been there... and in my case, that answer would sadly be TRUTHFUL! DH and I are planning to start weekly belly photos, I've already decided the first one should be titled, "don't get too excited yet, that's just chub"

My husband says, "We're still waiting for that stork to fly by!" <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/lol.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="lol">

I flat out lied today. I was asked point blank in a group of people and I didn't feel ready to share with everyone. So I looked her right in the eyes and told her no. I felt bad until DH told me that she had no business asking.
