I stopped all caffeine for my first 3 pgs. I started drinking coffee again when I was pg with my 4th because I just could not deal with migraines. Didn't make a difference at all in my babies birth weights. Oh well. I like my big babies

True, but the article I read on this, here, said this is the largest and most rigorous study so far, so I think it does carry some weight.

Good Glory! so if 9lbs 5ozs and 8lbs 12 ozs are low birth weight for ME, than I should KEEP drinking caffeine. Otherwise I'd be having 13 pounders?

Ridiculous.

Well I get horrible migraines and a little caffeine here and there to help with them is better than the strong drugs I'd have to take otherwise. The chances of me having a low weight baby are about nil, also.

LMAO, my first two sons, I drank absolutely no caffeine at all, and they were both tiny (under 7 lbs at 40 weeks with my first, under 8 lbs at 41 weeks with my 2nd). This time, I drank 5 or 6 chai teas during the 2nd-3rd trimester (none in the first), and she's on target to be my biggest baby yet and was almost 4 lbs at 30 weeks (or would be if she were going to full term...).

My biggest baby was 10 lbs 3 oz at 38 weeks. My second largest was 9 lbs 7 oz - I drank caffeine throughout both of these pregnancies.

With my third, I cut out everything that could be potentially harmful and had a 6 pound baby.

I have a little bit of coffee every day (none in 1st trimester just b/c I didn't want it) and baby is measuring very big. I'm not worried a bit about it. I've even had a few glasses of wine. One study isn't going to change that for me.

Thats my reasoning.

My mom jokes that the only way I would have a small baby (6-7 lbs) is if I had 2 in there lol.

I'm still going to drink my caffeine, like I did my last pregnancy as well. I also suffer from migraines that no one can get treated, pregnant or not, & have battled them for years. Some migraines does help the frequency of the headaches. DS was close to 8lbs, so I'm not really worried about the effects on weight because of that.

DD1 had IUGR (5lbs 3oz) and with her I had given up all caffeine.
DD2-3 I went ahead and drank my tea and they were 6 and almost 8lbs respectively!

I'm not saying, kick back the lattes... but you know...

I've heard caffeine helps prevent high blood sugar, which would be a good thing in my case. Ah well, this comes along when I'm 39w3d into my fourth and last pregnancy, anyway.
I drank a moderate amount of coffee with my others, and they were 8lb14oz, 10lbs, and 9lbs14oz - doesn't sound like the coffee did much harm, does it?

lets see - with DS (9lb3oz @ 35 weeks) I decaffeinated. with DD's I caffeinated and they were 8.14 and 8.5 respectively.

YEah - along with others - if caffeine leads to lower birthweight then I dont'want to think about how big my babies would be without it...

I'm surprised at the responses here. Does anyone want to debate whether or not caffeine is a drug? I mean, it is. IT IS.

So then it's about justifying use of an elective drug during pregnancy. If a baby has a "good" birthweight is that the be all, end all proof that a drug is safe for pregnancy? What happened to risk/benefit analysis? And isn't getting a headache from not drinking caffeine a sign of a physiological brain change occurring from ingestion of an "optional" drug?
