Thought I was doing so well in the supply department the second time around. No supplements at all thus far (6 months). I’m starting to doubt my evening supply.

Last week, I went out to dinner and returned shortly after son's normal evening feeding. I told DH to give him a bottle if I wasn’t home by 7:30p. I got home and he’d eaten 4 oz. I still nursed him for awhile and put him to bed for the night. He slept without a peep until 4:30 or 5a. He hasn’t done this in awhile. He usually stirs around 10:30; then up again at 1 or 2 for a feeding. Then back down til 6 or so. I thought this bottle thing-sleeping through the night was just a fluke, but decided to test it out after another week of several nightly wakeups. DH gave him a few oz last night while I was getting DD ready for bed. I nursed him for a bit before putting him down and he slept again without a peep until 3:30 this morning. This leads me to question my supply at night. Weird thing is that on the occasion that I’ve tried to feed him when he wakes at 10p – he doesn’t seem desperately hungry or anything. He usually just comforts himself back to sleep without eating. And I worry about changing our routine to giving him a bottle every night --- this will surely negatively impact my supply. One theory that I have is that by the time I sit down to nurse him to sleep (7:15) – he’s usually fussy and pretty tired. He often nurses for a bit but then conks out. If I try to nurse him earlier (6:45 or so) – he still falls asleep relatively quickly in a way that he doesn’t if DH gives him a bottle at that same time.

Not sure what course to take here. Thinking of taking some fenugreek to see if my supply is too low in the evening. See if that helps? Or just start giving him a pre-nursing bottle and pump more during the day to compensate. I do have a pretty sizable freezer stash that I could stop hoarding for this purpose.

Just wondering you have any insight. What do you do if they need a feeding to make it through the night but are too tired to take any in? Or perhaps if my supply was more robust at night - he'd take more in during that sleep-feed?

thanks!

I'll say that my 8 mo eats about 4 oz right before bed, and he's still waking after 2 hours or so for more food. So don't count on the bottle being the solution.

From what I've read, almost ALL women have lower supply in the evening and wonder if they have enough.
Is your LO gaining appropriately? (Check out Kellymom.com's great infant growth calculator)
If so, I wouldn't worry about it, mama.

Maybe your DH tired him out It's so easy to get neurotic and blame supply...

I had one bottlefed and one breastfed. When they were healthy (no croup or ear infections, etc.), their sleep schedules were fairly similar.

Everything else happened at a different ages, but I noticed no difference in sleep schedules. Both were sleeping 6+ hrs at night at the same age. My breastfed baby did spend a lot longer eating at night (1-1 1/2 hrs) sometimes both of us would fall asleep for a while (mostly me).
