I am currently dealing with VERY late toilet training in my dd, who is almost 5yo. We have previously worked with our pediatrician as well as a family therapist, both of whom have found no cause for alarm. Without getting too much into it all, I'm now seeing a counselor(MSW) about the issue. She hasn't yet met DD, but she has had a couple of sessions with me. One thing she said was that sometimes a learning disability can cause late toilet training. She asked whether DD was left or right handed--i said right. So she asked me to see if DD kicks a ball with her left or right foot. It was right. The other thing she suggested was to hand her a toilet paper roll and see whter she put it to her left or right eye. I did this, and she put it to her left eye again and again. She said that if this was the case, there COULD be some "left-right confusion" which could be a soft-marker for learning disability. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, can't confirm or deny, but when I was on the West Point pistol team we had quite few (3 out of 15) of us who were opposite eye dominant, and I can guarantee that they had no learning disabilities. Made it a little more difficult to get into a solid stance, but I don't think you're worrying about how well your kid will shoot a pistol yet..

Basically, in most people the dominant eye is the same side as the dominant hand. However, in some the were either naturally left sided, but retrained right sided, or just had a stronger opposite eye.

I really wouldn't worry about it, and just keep trying.

Thanks everyone, for replying.

Well, here's an update on our situation:

As I said in the OP, we've already worked with our pediatrician and a family therapist with regard to my dd, who is almost 5 and only about 50% toilet trained. The pedi has found no medical abnormalities, and the therapist could find nothing worrying about dd. She is happy and well-adjusted and has met all of her other developmental milestones on time or early. The late toilet training could simply be "normal" for her. But I just would like to make sure there is nothing else going on. She has had 2 private therapy sessions with a new therapist. She'll have 2 more, and then I'll go in for a conference. She enjoys the sessions, and doesn't even realize she's being observed. I would like to know if she does have a LD so that we could in that case begin the process of research that would help us to help her learn the best way for her needs. But, of course, we're hoping that all is normal and that she'll be fully toilet trained in her own sweet time. I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks again!
