I saw this mentioned a few times on the "admit it here - you gave up on cd's" (or similarly titled) thread. I understand that this is a rash from ammonia. But is this from ammonia not getting out of the cd's? Sitting in a wet diaper too long? Some babies reacting to ammonia on their skin (in which case, wouldn't a microfleece topped diaper work just as well as a disposable?)

Just curious....

Harrison was getting this. At least I think it was ammonia burn. His dipes would STINK and knock you down with the ammonia smell in the mornings. He would have blisters and redness. Even on his penis.

I started adding 1ml of Tea Tree Oil to the first of two rinses and it really seems to help....no more redness or whining that his paddywacker hurts. (he derived this term after dh called it a tallywacker)

I have not had a rash from ammonia. I have had my thick hemp diapers smell very strong of ammonia, but I use pocket diapers, so perhaps the fleece lining protects their skin from the ammonia-laden diaper inside, I'm not sure. In my case, the diapers aren't getting clean deep inside- it is not simply from how long they are in the diaper, although that is a contributing factor. I've never had a just-boiled or bleached diaper smell strong of ammonia in the morning.

xandra got it once and once was enough. we were in desparate need of stripping our dipes. they reaked of ammonia when she peed, and it made you sick at the morning change. she had AWFUL bleeding burns on her tush and inner thighs. it happened when we switched from pocket dipes at night to a premium prefold without fleece, and a wool soaker.

it made me soooo sad. took a while to clear up too. now if we don't use a pocket dipe we use a prefold with a fleece liner and soaker, it hasn't happened since.

the only other rash she had that was close to being that bad was an acidic poop rash from a weekend of eatting nothing but grapes and blueberries...............................
