explosive breastfed babies--prefolds vs. fitteds

I'd like to use prefolds with my new babe (due Nov), but I'm a little concerned about the explosive breastmilk poops. I plan on using either snappis or pins--will that hold it? I know fitteds would probably hold better, but I'm fine with good enough!

If you use covers with leg gussets you dont really need to use pins or snappies but you will have to wash your covers a lot more often. If you use fitteds you wont have to wash the covers with every change (maybe every 2-4) because the leg elastic will hold it all in.

Proraps are good newborn covers with gussets.
I used prefolds almost exclusively (had one fitted
) and I had maybe 4 or 6 blow outs on the cover, but never onto clothes. I was much better than when I used sposies on dd1.
I used bummis pull on nylon pants in the newborn size. They hold in everything, are cheap (so you can have a little more) and dry fast (they are really lightweight)
I used a snappi.

I seemed to always have poop leaks from the diaper onto the cover. I could never get it to stay off of the cover. I do recommend the pro-wraps, they are great for catching the poop! I also used (and still am) sugarpeas size 1, and love them

DD blew out of her PF w/ just about every single poop. If I had it to do over again, I would buy 2 or 3 dozen fitteds. We ONLY had PFs. I would never ever, never ever, never ever, NEVER EVER, diaper a newborn again in just PFs.

ooof, spiceymama. my eyes hurt from that one.
but those are the opinions i asked for!
just out of curiousity, what did you use with your pf's? pins? snappis? lay them in the wrap?

i do plan on having a few fitteds (probably a dozen or so) and i do like the sugarpeas, mamajules! i just don't want to buy a lot of newborn fitteds that the babe will outgrow in a month or two, and pf's and some sugarpeas seem to be the way to go.

If I may say, the MJ's sherpa smalls from babymarketplace did us very well. They catch exploding poo and are pretty absorbent also. I did like my indian prefolds, but I was too chicken to go it on just prefolds.

C didn't start the big poops until around 6 wk? maybe. We loved pfs for those early days. We didnt have snappi/pf leaks. I loved pfs for those early days. i had a few small fitteds, but mainly waited to invest that money for mediums, many of which fit him starting around 4-5 wks. (8lb9oz @ birth).

I'll be cding my first newborn next month
, but I'm currently using cloth on my toddler (mainly prefolds) and I'm telling you, learn the "sidewall" fold that one of the kind MDC moms posted here a few weeks ago (just do a search and you'll find it!) It's hands-down the BEST fold I've tried for containing bf or any sort of poo and my wool covers (and myself) are endlessly grateful!
Oh, I snappi my pfs, fwiw...

sorry about that! I used a snappi. In the beggining I was much to afraid to use pins. You can find CHEAP newborn fitteds at The Baby Marketplace . You can't beat 3.95 each, less than that if you buy more than 20!

We use PFs and a few kissaluvs on ds. In terms of blowouts, it ALL depends on how well you fasten the diaper. Example: when I put the diaper on...no blowout, no leak; when dh puts the diaper on...caution! We use snappis, bummis SWW, proraps, and now bumkins. I think my favorite is the bumkins (never had a leak), but all babies fit into covers differently.

The way I see it, it cost me the same $ to buy 2 kissaluvs as it did to buy a dozen CPFs. They grow so fast at this stage, it wasn't worth it to us to invest in a lot of fitted diapers. Plus, the CPFs will be used later as doublers and pocket stuffers.
But I can tell you a funny story that shows exactly why it is so hard to contain those BF explosions!

My DH was changing Keira's diaper. (I was in the other room) He takes off the soiled diaper and then I hear that unmistakable newborn BF pooping sound PPPPFFFFFTTTTTTT. Then I hear " Oh God Oh God Oh God!" I run in to find that DD pooped before he could even wipe her and she HIT THE WALL 3 FEET AWAY AND SPLATTERED POOP 6 FEET UP THE WALL!!!! Poor DH is standing there holding one little sposie wipe with a look of sheer disbelief on his face. I so wish I had the camera!

To this day my DS still colors pictures of it. He draws her lying on the changing table then takes his yellow crayon and colors the entire wall yellow!

So don't feel bad if you can't contain those blow outs! They truly are explosive. I'm suprised they don't blow the diapers right off the baby :LOL

I agree! At first Zane pooped just a little, but often. All his dipes held it in. At about 4-6 weeks he started going less often so when he goes look out! He's 8 weeks now and goes every 3-4 days. I don't think there's a diaper made that would hold 100% of it. If I have the pf snug it holds it as well, or nearly as well, as a fitted. The most important factors seem to be a snug fit at legs and waist and enough room in the diaper to hold it all.

I spent way too much $$$ getting a large variety of dipes and covers for our newborn. If I had it to do over I'd get a dz preemie pfs, 2 dz infant pfs, 3 PUL covers, 3 wool covers, and 6-8 xs Fuzzi Bunz for dad, outings, trim fit, etc. I'm not sure if I'd buy any fitteds, or at least not very many.

Now that he's in smalls and not pooping at night I like fleece lined fitteds for overnight with a wool cover. If his fitteds are in the wash then I like FB. I still reach for a pf more than anything else during the day. Ds #1 and dh reach for fitteds and FB. I also use FBs when I want a trim fit under a particular outfit.

I like the sidewall fold that was mentioned above. It's a lot like a angel fold, but with a little more holding power at the leg. http://www.littleturtleknits.com/sidewallpf.htm I can Snappi an infant cpf as snug as his KL with this fold. I liked the bikini twist with a preemie pf when he was newborn. It wasn't too bulky and held everything in.

GL!

Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm killing myself laughing about that post, Nurse131. It was such a well described scene. And I can totally see it happening to my husband. In fact I had him come read the post and he killed himsel laughing too.

nurse131 that's the funniest diapering story I've heard in a long time! When DH gets home today, I'm going to make him read it. He thinks that our child(ren) will be perfect--quiet, well-behaved, clean...i.e. they won't do things like make icky poops or spit up all over.
He says it jokingly, but sometimes I'm not sure...

If you're fine with good enough, then CPFs are definitely the way to go. I use CPFs exclusively with my daughter, even with explosive bf bm's, I've only had complete 2-3 blowouts. As long as you have a cover that is snug enough around the thighs, the cover will hold it in.

I would also recommend using a snappi. It seems to "pull in" the thighs of the diaper much better than pins do. And check out Karen's cloth diapering page http://kfegelman.home.comcast.net and specifically her prefold folding page http://kfegelman.home.comcast.net/pf_folds.html for some great tips.

Good luck with the upcoming babe!

ditto. Shes never had any on the clothes. I was afraid since my others were sposies at birth, and they ALWAYS had blowouts. Im so excited that we havent had that problem yet! I do have a few more fitteds and havent had a problem with those, except one always leaks poo to the cover because the leg gap is too big.
