With dc #1 I had heart burn pretty bad, but i just ate tums like candy and it was manageable. Not this time around! I have 24 hour heartburn that constantly sends me into gagging fits because I can taste the acid all the time. I cant sleep, sit, stand, anything!!
This is what I have tried:
milk, breads, protiens, tums/rolaids,pregnancy tea, carrots, mango and papya, small meals more frequently, big meals less frequently, not drinking with meal, drinking with meal, bland foods, laying propped up (when I sleep)....the list goes on.
Water seems to make it worse and I LOVE water. I really need some help with this, I am miserable and I am afraid that it is going to cause damage to my esophogus.

As for forgetfullness, this is a major problem too. I cant remember anything. I have lists strung all over the house, all duplicates, because I cant even remember if/where I wrote the list before!! What can I do to keep my mind a little straighter??

Help me I am going nuts.

HUGS mama! Have you spoken with your OB/Midwife? Perhaps there is something you could be prescribed. What you're experiencing sounds a lot more severe than the 'normal' or 'average' heartburn of pregnancy.

As for the forgetfulness, I'm the same way. I blame it on the baby, sucking the blood away from my brain to the placenta, LOL.

I'm dealing with both problems as well. For the heartburn, have you tried chewing gum? Your saliva neutralizes the acid. That's worked for me. Milkshakes also seem to temporarily help. I've found I have to drink my water room temperature because cold just hurts. And I absolutely cannot lay down for several hours after I eat, though it hit me yesterday after dinner and I was Christmas shopping, but I think the spicyness of the tacos may have contributed and the stress of shopping. I've tried everything you've tried, too, and I still deal with it, though I've found things to make it go away temporarily. I am SOOOO tired of sleeping on the couch propped up!

I haven't figured out anything for the forgetfulness, so I'm interested in seeing what others say.

I ended up on heartburn meds (speaking of forgetfulness, can't remember what they are called) last pg and think I'm probably going to end up on them this time too. I'm taking papaya enzymes and eating raw almonds which helps a bit but I can't take another 12 weeks of my throat feeling like its being eaten alive.

Oh I hear ya' mama! I'm in my last trimester, but my midwife recommended Prilosec because my heartburn/reflux was so bad I was vomiting after I ate. It has really helped, but I do feel guilty for taking it...I try tums first. And FWIW, you are supposed to take it regularly for best results, I just don't

For the heartburn, slippery elm bark lozenges have worked well for me. They are safe for pg. I can't recall the brand right now...I think it is Thayers or something like that. They come in a little gold colored box in the lozenge area of your health food store. It contains just slippery elm bark and nothing else. If you can't find them, you could get some slippery elm bark powder in the bulk herbs and make a tea out of it, or stir it into heated apple juice. It's pretty tasty. You can also make your own chewy lozenges by mixing the powder with enough honey to make a "dough" and roll it into little balls.

I gave up with my heartburn... it wwas bad enough i was throwing up. My doc says i can have up to 40mg of Pepcid twice a day, and gave me a script for it. My mw was cool with it. A side note, MW really didn't want me doing Tums because it causes calcification of the placenta....

Ah, heartburn....There's an Alicia Keys song called Heartburn that goes through my head....Let me whine here, too..

I am getting dehydrated casue it is hard to drink enough at once. My Floradix iron supplement causes heartburn so I hate to take it now. I shouldn't eat at night, but don't get home from work till 7 or later many times. I am afraid to change postions in bed caus eI might stir up acid...

I hate the feeling that I had corrosive battery acid poured down my throat while sleeping....I wake at 3:30 almost every morning with it, DH gets up and gets me a sip of milk, I figure if it will go away or if I have to puke. Yuk. SAdly, sometimes I feel like the only way to sleep is on an empty stomach, and if i am backwashing anyway I end up vomiting. Yuk.

I avoided tums cause it seems to just buffer acid, so you make more, and get more heartburn. I loved papya enzmes. Slippery elm tablets by Thayers works if you eat enough to buffer the acid. Empty stomach and a sip of milk is my best bet of sleeping past 3:30 am....

My accupuncturist gave me some herbs to combat heartburn, I have to start them now. She said heartburn, besides being a normal pregnancy complaint, also is a heat disorder, and should be helped by my treatment. I am also getting chiropractic, but not noticing an impact. Spicy foods and flour-y christmas cookies are out for now!

And as far as forgetfullness- I can't remember what I forgot. So I guess that part is pretty painless, I don't know what I'm missing so I get to feel I am unaffected by pregnancy brain

chiropractic, acupuncture, chamomile tea if you aren't allergic will help heal stomach and esophagus- the hispanic gals here drink it all the time (matricaria is the latin name like mother or belonging to mother) go for sips not tons, I also like the digestive enzymes taken with meals. Reduce over all simple sugars. Another thing that works but has to be taken separately- 2 hrs before or after your vitamins or any medications activated charcoal caps- the thing is they absorb everything so it would be worthless to take with vitamins because your vits would be sucked up. anyway charcoal caps are good to have around for many things like stomach flu and diarrhea absorbs certain toxins and poisons.
PS
on the subject of forgetfulness it might be just hormones or it could be that you need more B vitamins in general. Bvitamins are associated with all sorts of enzymatic stuff from digestion to brain and neuro functions
