I'm new to the whole gardening thing, so I'm coming here in hopes for advice. So, this is what I'd like to do: some container gardening starting now (flowers). Is this realistic, am I too late in the "season"? I live in Northern Cali, where the weather is still getting between 70-80 during the day, lots of sunshine, and the mid-high 50's at nite. In winter it becomes our rainy season, and altho cold, we never get frost. Can I grow something? If so, any suggestions? Obviously I could do lots in the spring, but I just wanted to spruce up our yard now...am I being too overzealous?

oh definatly, go to your local garden shop and see what they have to offer. garden mums and pansys are my favorite fall/winter flowers. pansies love cooler weather and here in nc they'll bloom through out the winter until it gets hot in mid spring. there are some ornamental grasses that do ok in cooler weather. and heath, which is a lovely splash of color winter wise. luck and start out simple, imo the mums and pansies are very hard to mess up.

You can have a beautiful container garden in San Jose – snapdragons, pansies, violas, and allysium are my favorites right now. Ask for help at a nursery if you are not sure. Be sure to water them daily until they root.
