Can anyone recommend a fun family activity, say for 2 hours, somewhere in the Raleigh area? Preferably outdoors (a hike, a zoo, a fantastic playground ....). Our kids are 2 and 4 years old.

Also, any recommendations for good vegetarian family-appropriate restaurants anywhere between Raleigh and Greensboro?

Much obliged.

There's Pullen Park . It's a nice big park with a short walking trail, a couple playgrounds, a little train you can ride around the park (I think it cost $1/person), a merry-go-round, paddle boats. Everything is pretty inexpensive. Plus just some shaded wooded areas. It's right downtown, and a lot of fun.

You could also go to Durham to the Museum of Life & Science. It's kind of pricey, though. They have some great walking trails and outdoor amusements that could definitely keep the kids busy for 2 hours.

If you wanted more indoors (and free) I would suggest the Natural Sciences museum in downtown Raleigh. My kids love going there.

I know there are some great vegetarian restaurants in the area, but someone else might be better at telling you what they are.

Not too far from Pullen Park on Wade Ave. in Raleigh is Whole Foods Grocery. We go there every couple of weeks for brunch or dinner with our 3 yr. old and 5mo. old. It's not a sit-down restaurant, but they have a little "cafe" with a super-yummy hot/cold bar with lots of veg options.
There's also Irregardless Cafe in Raleigh. Fabulous Vegetarian restaurant.

Thank you! Our trip there was yesterday. We went to Umpstead state park and we ate at Zest Cafe (not a "vegetarian" restaurant but they had some wonderful veggie things on their menu.)
