My mom mentioned yesterday that she was thinking she'd like to get me, dh, and dd one big family gift for Christmas. But she doesn't have any specific ideas. If we hadn't just bought a tent this summer, that would be just the right kind of thing. But beyond that, I'm stumped. We like outdoor family activities (camping, kayaking, hiking) but we are pretty well-equipped for those. But that's the only area of ideas I've come up with so far. If you could ask for a big family gift, what would you want?

Maybe a yearly state park pass (if you go camping in those)?

Yearly science/children's/art museum membership?

We do live 45 minutes from Acadia National Park, but we rarely go there in the summer. Maybe a pass would encourage us to take advantage of it!

I'm really stumped. Maybe an experience would be better for us than a thing. Hmmm.....

If it were us, I'd lean toward:

a large freezer (we could really use one but don't 'need' it - could still be a fun kid family gift if it "came with" a favorite frozen treat inside )

an exercise bike (not really kid-useful for ours, but could be fun for older kids)

a couple hundred bucks on a GC for our local grocery store or a favorite restaurant - so we could go out/get convenient food without worrying about it not being in the budget (so easing the stress of what to do for meals, and being a fun 'treat' that wouldn't have the same cost otherwise).

paying for a professional portrait session for the whole fam is a nice thing too

What's the price range?

We've gotten things like Zoo/Museum memberships, passes to local amusement parks, beach passes. My mom is thinking of getting us Kinect this year.

She probably spends $200+ on all of us most years, so one big gift would be in that range.

I like the portait session idea, but dh probably wouldn't get very excited about that. If I had a decent bike I'd suggest a bike rack for the car and one of those extra kid seats like this: http://trail-a-bike.com/ (Oh, those are more expensive than I thought!).

My grandparents use to get us a family trip every year for Christmas. It was the most looked forward present of the year.. and it was great because it gave us time to spend as a family. They also gave trips for birthday, I remember each one I went on with them and I had a lot of fun being with grandma and grandpa.
