We're doing a train set for Jett for Christmas and I'd love to hear what pieces are particularly cool and fun, and what seemed neat but was a waste of money.

This is the set we're planning to get: http://tinyurl.com/yh3sad

We already have the Plan City firehouse: http://www.oliebollen.com/detail.aspx?ID=755&cc=go

What pieces, accessories, etc., do you (or your DC) recommend?

DD is only 2 and not yet really into role play with little figures. However she loves the different vehicles, especially anything with a trailer or cargo that can be loaded and unloaded. We have a garage with ramps to run the cars down which is also popular.

So far she hasn't shown any interest in the actual road pieces or train tracks when we see them at other peoples houses so we haven't bothered with them.

We build a lot of extra ramps and bridges for the cars with wooden blocks.

For the younger ages, I think the most popular piece we have (other than plain track) is the Lifting & Crossing Bridge:

You push down on the red part and the bridge lifts up. DS still likes it (he is 5) but the kids in the 2-4 range seem to LOVE it. Very satisfying for them.

DS has wanted a grand roundhouse for a while, but they are a bit too much $ for us:

We have the Curious George goes to the zoo, but any train w/zoo cars and animals would be just as good! The kids seem to like driving the animals around.
