DS love poetry (but not Shel Silverstein <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/shrug.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="shrug">)<br><br>
Do you have any recommendations for books I can request from the library?

The girls love all these poets, especially Nash and Lear. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"><br><br>
Another big fave around here is <i>Moon Have You Met My Mother</i> by Karla Kuskin, with our all time favorite Buggity Buggity Bug (from memory, so it may not be quite right):
<blockquote><p>Buggity Buggity Bug<br>
Wandering aimlessly<br>
Buggishly smug.<br>
When all of a sudden<br>
Along came a shoe<br>
Out with another shoe<br>
Wandering too.<br>
The shoes went on wandering<br>
Left, Right, Left, SPLAT.<br>
Bugs very frequently perish like that.<br><br></p></blockquote>
Many of her poems are about creativity and the poet's mind, in a gentle way.

Oddhopper Opera is unique with beautiful illustrations. It also has some ants parts.<br><br><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325&tag=motheringhud-20&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FOddhopper-Opera-Bugs-Garden-Verses%2Fdp%2F0152058559%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_sr_1%2F104-0212936-0644750%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1188787802%26sr%3D8-1" target="_blank">http://www.amazon.com/Oddhopper-Oper...8787802&sr=8-1</a>

<span style="text-decoration:underline;">Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices</span> by Paul Fleischman is wonderful and meant to be read aloud. All the poems, when read in two voices, work to provide the sound of an insect. You and DS could read them together.<br><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325&tag=motheringhud-20&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FJoyful-Noise-Poems-Two-Voices%2Fdp%2F0064460932%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_sr_1%2F103-8432268-4875038%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1188800177%26sr%3D1-1" target="_blank">http://www.amazon.com/Joyful-Noise-P...8800177&sr=1-1</a><br><br>
Paul Fleischman also has a couple more books for two or more voices. All very good.

I was asking my MIL (former teacher) for some poetry suggestions for DS. When we met her at Sturbridge Village she showed up with the following to pass on to us:<br><br>
Garden of Verses (her copy from childhood illustrated by Eul Alie)<br>
Real Mother Goose (replaced the dog-eared copy we had)<br><br><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325&tag=motheringhud-20&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FRandom-House-Book-Poetry-Children%2Fdp%2F0394850106%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_sr_1%2F105-2524962-5314029%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1188824689%26sr%3D1-1" target="_blank">Random House Book of Poetry</a><br><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325&tag=motheringhud-20&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FChilds-Book-Poems-Gyo-Fujikawa%2Fdp%2F1402750617%2Fref%3Dsr_1_1%2F105-2524962-5314029%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1188824751%26sr%3D1-1" target="_blank">A Child's Book of Poems</a> (illustrated by Fujikawa)<br><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325&tag=motheringhud-20&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FSing-Song-Popcorn-Every-Childs%2Fdp%2F059043974X%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_2%2F105-2524962-5314029%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1188824799%26sr%3D1-2" target="_blank">Sing A Song of Pocorn</a> (great illustrations)<br><br><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325&tag=motheringhud-20&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FDoodle-Dandies-Poems-That-Shape%2Fdp%2F0689848897%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_sr_1%2F105-2524962-5314029%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1188824855%26sr%3D1-1" target="_blank">Doodle Dandies: Poems that take shape</a> (very cute)<br><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325&tag=motheringhud-20&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FGood-Books-Times-Trophy-Picture%2Fdp%2F0064462226%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_sr_1%2F105-2524962-5314029%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1188824981%26sr%3D1-1" target="_blank">Good Books, Good Times</a> (poetry about books)<br><br>

I sort of new I was asking for trouble when posting this thread... sort of like opening my copy of Rainbow Resource for the first time. I was pleased to empty a few things out of my shopping cart on amazon last night after my MIL's gifts.
