WASHINGTON Aug 7, 2006 (AP)- Eleven Egyptian students who arrived in the United States last month are being sought by U.S. authorities after failing to turn up at Montana State University.

The 11 Egyptian men were among a larger group of students who arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York from Cairo on July 29 with valid visas, according to FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

The others have arrived at the Bozeman, Mont., campus. When the 11 didn't turn up by the end of the last week, the FBI issued a lookout to state and local law enforcement, said FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko.

A spokesperson for MSU was on Tucker, on MSNBC, yesterday. She said that the group originally consisted of 17 students, six of which made it to the university. These six have been questioned about the others' whereabouts, but their answers are not being released due to the ongoing investigation.

They were all part of a 30-day immersion program at the university.

Hopefully, these students are safe. It was hinted on yesterday's show that the 11 missing students may have decided to bag their studies and hang out in NYC for a while, seeing the sights.

I hope that's all it is. It doesn't show a lot of common sense for a group of young arab men to decide to go missing in New York these days......

Of course, no one ever accused young men of having a great deal of common sense.

One thing of note:

"At this point all they have done is not show up for a scheduled academic program," Kolko said. "There is no threat associated with these men."
So it sounds like they aren't being to crazy...

Not unusual for students to go missing. I bet there's still TONS that INS has no clue where they went.

I wonder if the only reason these guys made the news is because they're from Egypt.

Before I read the article, I assumed that the FBI was concerned only for the safety of these young men. How thoughtful of the FBI.

The above shoud be read 'dripping with sarcasm'.

you know what? i'd like to know where these men are, and why one was in minnesota, and for once, i might, though still withholding judgement til full story comes out, actually support the fbi in something.

It sounds strange, but yep I'm withholding judgment until the whole story comes out. The news likes to get people with sensation headlines, that, while might be true, are said in such a way that it favors one party. I'd like to see the whole story, both sides, before coming to a conclusion.

Yup. If the visas of these young men require them to attend classes at a certain university, then I'm really OK with requiring them to show up or go home. And I don't care where they're from. At a minimum, it shows *really* poor judgement for them to have not shown up where they were supposed to be. Heck, maybe they should just be sent home for stupidity.

I dunno. Am I the only one that thinks it is concerning that these young men came here in a group and appear to be splitting up into various states?

Of course the two in NJ turned themselves in. I don't know what to think.

I suppose, like others, I will reserve my judgement and see how this plays out. It most likely is media over-hype.
