For the past week or two, I've been having a strong fear of a transfer. We're planning on a homebirth with a great midwife. I live two blocks away from our local hospital which IMO is HORRIBLE!!!! They routinely seperate moms and babes for too long, do unnecessary testing, and often supplement without permission. Their protocol is to check the babe's blood sugar, which normally drops after birth. If the babe's sugar is too low "they have" to give formula. GRRRR.

Anyway, I've been having this fear. I'm working really hard to visualize the birth we want in our home, or at least the part where the babe is born.

Anyone have these fears too? Anything to help?

I'm always slightly paranoid about a transfer. Do you have a back-up plan for if you did have to transfer? I will have a one time appt with a CNM at a local hospital so I wouldn't go in via the ER if we did have to tx. Supposedly your treatment is much worse if you go in that way. Are there any other hospitals around?

Transfers are always a possibility but the chances are really slim! Just keep thinking positively and if it makes you feel better you can write out an emergency transfer plan.

i'm scared about doing a transfer as well. i don't think the hospitals here are too bad, and the back-up OB that my midwifery practice has sounds pretty good from what they have told me...i think worse than transferring would be to end up with a c-section. even if it's a true emergency to save my/baby's life it still is not what i want for this birth experience, especially since it is likely to be my last one. : so i'm trying to just focus on thinking positive!!!
