I have another thread here about an article published in my local newspaper on the topic of vaccines/immunizations.

I'm drafting a response letter and would love constructive criticism.

Here's my draft:

I appreciate the efforts of THE NAME OF THE NEWSPAPER to educate parents regarding the benefits and risks of healthcare options for their children. Accurate unbiased information is a critical step in allowing parents to be informed consumers of healthcare services.

However, I was confused and alarmed by the April 25th article “Parents reminded of the importance of immunizations for their babies” by REPORTER'S NAME. In particular there was a statement in this article where it was alleged that DOCTOR'S NAME estimated the risk of true harm due to immunizations to be “somewhere in the neighborhood of one in a million.” I sincerely hope that statement was a reporting error because information reported by vaccine producers states otherwise.

I’ve included just a few quotes from vaccine inserts with links to online sources from the producers and a listing of online sources for the vaccine inserts for some of the most commonly administered vaccines.

The package insert for PEDIARIX (a Diphtheria and Tetanus Toxoids and Acellular Pertussis Adsorbed Hepatitis B (Recombinant) and Inactivated Poliovirus vaccine combined) produced by GlaxoSmithKline can be found online at http://us.gsk.com/products/assets/us_pediarix.pdf . It states that “In 14 clinical trials, 5 deaths were reported among 8,088 (0.06%) recipients of PEDIARIX and 1 death was reported among 2,287 (0.04%) recipients of comparator vaccines. Causes of death in the group that received PEDIARIX included 2 cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and one case of each of the following: Convulsive disorder, congenital immunodeficiency with sepsis, and neuroblastoma.”

The package insert for ActHIB (a Haemophilus b conjugate vaccine) produced by Sanofi Pasteur Inc. can be found online at http://vaers.hhs.gov/pdf/ActHIB.pdf . It states, “In a randomized, double-blind US clinical trial, ActHIB vaccine was given concomitantly with DTP to more than 5,000 infants and Hepatitis B vaccine was given with DTP to a similar number. In this large study, deaths due to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and other causes were observed but were not different in the two groups. In the first 48 hours following immunization, two definite and three possible seizures were observed after ActHIB vaccine and DTP in comparison with none after Hepatitis B vaccine and DTP….Other adverse reactions reported with administration of other Haemophilus b conjugate vaccines include urticaria, seizures, hives, renal failure and Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS).”

To learn more about the reported instances of true harm reported with various vaccines, parents can view the package inserts for other vaccines as follow:

The package insert for VARIVAX (a live Varicella virus vaccine) produced by Merck & Co., Inc. can be found online at http://www.merck.com/product/usa/pi_...varivax_pi.pdf .

The package insert for RECOMBIVAX HB (a Hepatitis B Recombinant vaccine) produced by Merck & Co., Inc. can be found online at http://www.merck.com/product/usa/pi_...ombivax_pi.pdf .

The package insert for Rotashield (a Live, Oral, Tetravalent, Rotavirus Vaccine) produced by Wyeth-Ayerst can be found online at http://www.fda.gov/cber/label/rotawy083198lb.pdf .

The package insert for M-M-R II (a live Measles, Mumps, and Rubella virus vaccine) produced by Merck & Co., Inc. can be found online at http://www.merck.com/product/usa/pi_.../mmr_ii_pi.pdf .

I’d also like to remind parents that under the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986, health-care providers and manufacturers are required to record and report certain suspected adverse events occurring within specific time periods after vaccination. Also, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has established a Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) which will accept all reports of suspected events. You can visit VAERS online at http://vaers.hhs.gov/ .

I like your approach. Choosing one point. Offering a clear series of factual quotes that show the inaccuracy of the original statement. Staying calm and cool.

Good job.
