Okay so I was at LLL the other night and we were talking about my supply issues...

One of the LLL leader's told me to go into a liquor store and get an unpasterized german beer and drink one a night and it should increase my supply.

My concern is that I'm a light weight and my DD does nurse at night... She nurses around 7pm, sometimes again at 11 or 12 and then around 4am. I'm open to anything to decrease the amount of donor milk we are using.

I think we're on the way to decreasing the amount of supplement... Since she started nursing at night, her intake went from roughly 24 oz to roughly 16 oz (I know, BIG decrease!). I'm taking domperidone (30mg AM, 40mg early afternoon, 30mg evening and 30mg night) and am thinking about saw palmetto and fenugreek. I've done fenugreek alone before and it hasn't worked but I've heard good things about saw palmetto.

What does anyone know about a beer a day? I've heard different things... One said to use guiness (sp?) but the LLL's said an unpasturized beer will have a high amount of hopps.

According to this abstract Chemically it has little to do with the hops or the alcohol but the barley though they do acknowledge that the relaxation of the alcohol might help.

However, this study suggests babies don't like beer flavored breastmilk.

I'm not sure if the people you talked to know much about beer production. An import beer is almost certainly pasturized. When my DH makes beer the hops are added to the must (boiling beer tea) and thus have already faced heat. The hops leaves have been strained away by the end which is when pasturization would occur.

So I'm skeptical about beer helping with milk production. This isn't to say I didn't try it a bit when I was trying to induce lactation before my DD was adopted. O'Douls will supposedly do the job just as well. It has barley and hops but no alcohol.

If you have a mild low supply issue, read this from kellymom:

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/low-supply.html

If you have more severe issues, read the sticky at the top of the BF challenges forum on low milk supply.

HTH

Also, you can buy hops separately at the health food store & steep you own tea.
